PS4 or XBOX One

Right then

going to take the plunge. There are a few threads on here about both would for those of us who fancy taking the plunge, maybe wrap it up in 1 thread.

I have a PS3 with about 18 games at the mo. so no doubt will be looking to shift that.

I am not an avid gamer, I dont play games for days on end.

what is the best console. I initially went for the PS3 as I could play online for nothing. That is not the case anymore.

what makes one console better than that other

I have both, and feel more 'at home' so to speak with the PS4 personally.

The UI is slicker, I prefer the controller and you get free PS4/PS3/PS Vita games every month with PS+. You add into this that the PS4 is £80 cheaper than the XB1 too and it is a bit of a no brainer to me really.

The only thing the Xbox One has going for it is Kinect (which doesn't work properly 30% of the time) and the entertainment/tv functionality. If you're primarily going to use the console in your entertainment centre under your 'main' tv then the XB1's TV/music functionality comes into play, if you've no interest in that and you purely want a games console first and foremost go with the PS4.

As for the actual games, it depends what you're into but the XB1 has a slightly better 1st party launch line-up with Dead Rising 3, RYSE:Son of Rome and Forza Motorsport 5 compared to Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall for the PS4

For Gaming: PS4 is miles better

For All in One: Xbox One

"miles" better? Really? Reason? Have yet to read any views which say that. Most say its very close / depends which games you like best / the Xbox controller is still ahead etc etc

1080p > 720p mate.

Play BF4 or COD on both and you'll see the miles.

I have played COD on both - struggled to see any difference. They both look good and quite an improvement over the previous gen. Might be my eyes of course! But I really dont think any difference is material, which seems to be the conclusion shared by most testers / mags. That might change as more games come out and move developers take advantage of the PS4 capability

You remind me of the HD luddites who insisted they can't see any difference.

The maths is pretty simple.

1280 x 720 = 921,600 pixels.

1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 pixels.

That's over twice as much detail.

No need for the insults, particularly as you have failed to grasp an understanding of the reality. I will make it simple for you - I have a full HD TV but no one is broadcasting any programs in Full HD yet, so its irrelevant.

Xbox One vs PS4 –Graphics

A key question for any head-to-head in the games world is - which has better graphics? It is a question that is, and will probably always be, very difficult to impossible to answer.

As with the current Xbox 360 vs PS3 battle, which console has prettier graphics will vary from game-to-game, and generally the difference is not that great. It's all down to the way games are made.

Or you could try: http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&ved=0CEMQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.computerandvideogames.com%2F437842%2Fcod-ghosts-reviews-split-over-xbox-one-vs-ps4-comparisons%2F&ei=mcDXUp2IH47T7AbSnoCoCw&usg=AFQjCNEXuGWSLM2a0zmK6tkSza7fcAaogQ

I am sure there are others out there with a different view which say the PS4 shades it. But stop with this "miles better" nonsense, at least until you understand that number of pixels means sod all by itself

It's simple maths, Bucks Saint.

Definition is determined by the number of discrete pixels you can bang on a screen. There are other factors too; the smaller the screen, the better it looks. Those things being equal, 1080p is 2x more defined than 720p - and there's no getting away from it.

I've been reading the Digital Foundry stuff over at Eurogamer since release.

I'd suggest you read this before proceeding further.

I've bought a PS4 after looking at both, although I'm sure you will be happy with whichever you go for. I have personal predjudices about microsoft which guided me away from the one - had so many issues with the 360 and not a fan of the way they dealt with accounts being blocked etc.

Nowadays very few games are limited to only one console ( certainly compared to the megadrive/N64 era) so ultimately it comes down to personal choice

the PS4 controller is the best controller I've ever held, excited to see what the game companies do with it

Oh dear. more insults. I can do the maths just fine. Which bit of Full HD TV did you not understand? You can fuss about number of pixels all you like but you are still missing the point. Its only relevant if a game makes use of them.

Where are the insults? Personally, I think you're being a tad picky and you're the one that's missed the point.

XBox One can bung out a 1080p signal. It just isn't using all the pixels on some cross-platform games.

On the PS4, those same games are filling an entire full HD screen.

Do you still think I've missed the point? Is your comprehension matrix as muddled as your insult detection system?*

(* that was an insult, btw. I know you have trouble).

I've quantified how much better COD is. It has twice the detail of the upscaled 720p XBox One version.

How is "twice as detailed" suddenly "very close"? Please answer that.

In what way is a difference of over a million discrete pixels a matter of opinion? :D

I tire of this. If all you're going to do is regurgitate the vague opinions of others, then I believe the only course of action is to show you. Anyone interested in this already-won technical cockfight should take a look too.

Image 3) That 720 image upscaled. This is what the XBox One does on COD and BF4.

Your insistence that Image 1 and Image 3 are "very close" is a load of rubs.

You bought a less powerful machine at a higher price. Get over it.

I said it varies games to game. It depends on different developers making use of the capability, or not, as the case may be. Not every game does, or will. But OK, only your view counts and all the other views out there are "vague" and so should be ignored. I have not spent anything

Indeed it does, but only really on the XBOX One. There isn't a single example of a cross-platform game having higher visual fidelity on the One than it does on the PS4. Let's not forget why we're here. Jamie is looking to buy a new console and he wants the best advice.

My advice is that if you want the most powerful console, you go for the PS4; it's backed up by the specialist press, basic area mathematical calculations and the screenshots above. Yes, games like FIFA will run just fine at 1080p on One. There is less to do, so it's hardly surprising.

The development libraries for the XBox One are hardly what you can call mature; during the run up to launch developers were getting new versions of the SDK on a weekly basis. Ultimately, Microsoft invested far too much time, energy and processor power on white elephants like skeletal recognition ( pegged at around 10% of CPU ). Future optimisations of the SDK may help to mitigate the 1080p issue, but the technical superiority goes right down to the metal, Sony will be optimising their SDK too.

The XBox One is never going to catch up on cross-platform games, it's a less capable machine and as I've said before, it's a minor scandal that MS have released a machine in 2013 that falls short on filling an HD panel.

Personally I buy the console for the gaming. Hi res all powerful graphics are all well and good, but, for example, as Polygon's review of CoD:Ghosts state, there are noticeable frame rate issues on the PS4 version of the game, that aren't there on the Xbox One.

Go to PSN store, top menu on left hand side. Instant game collection. Don't forget you can get free games for a PS3/Vita if you have them.

What can you currently get?

And If I'm honest I didn't realise you could get Skyrim on the PS4 , excited about the elder scrolls online

Especially as you could pick up Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Halo 5, and exclusive content for the incredible looking 'the Division'. All while using an HDMI in so the kids can still watch tv on the same screen at the same time. And I tell you it's brilliant Beijing able to switch games just by saying "go to Fifa 14". Not to mention you don't get the reflection of an annoying blue light in your tv while you're playing.

You don't need to wait for all those games. The killer app for the XBox One, "unpaid apologism for an inferior product", was available for pre-order months ago and was released at launch.

That's the amusing thing, James. Historically, I've never been a fanboy. I've been a collect-em-all, as the number of machines in my house testifies.

I will buy an XBOX One when it's worth doing so, but I'm not going to let a couple of monkeys desperate to justify their own purchases give bad advice just to get people in the same poorly-constructed boat that they're in.

Having now played both I have to say, as a casual consumer I still see very little difference.

The imminent announcement of Mass Effect 4 will lead me to an important decision though.... I will have to choose. From my layman's viewpoint I see the following points:

PS4:

Marginally better graphical capability

My friends primarily have this system

Xbox One:

I prefer the controller

Media integration

Level points:

Online capabilities

It's going to be very tricky to decide. The next 6 months or so will help shape this. Right now though it seems to be a battle between whether I want to (will have time to) play online with my mates or want things to work at their best with my other entertainment equipment.

I'd have to take issue with Colinjb's margins and point him to the cold hard numbers and the screenshots. Marginal doesn't cover it. It's more accurate to say that some games are identical; others have considerably less graphical fidelity.

Moving onto another area; let's talk sales. The last time that any sales figures were released (end of 2013), PS4 was at 4.2 million while XBox One was at 3 million. That's a significant lead already. Japan isn't even in the mixer yet.

The problem for One owners will be that gap getting appreciably bigger, because at the very least, it'll end up determining the lead console SKU. During the last gen, the 360 was lead console SKU for most console games, meaning that the 360 was the main focus and the PS3 version was a port. There are a number of reasons for that. Timing would be one and Sony's insane decision to use something completely different (Cell processor) are both factors. If you take a look at side-by-side comparisons on Digital Foundry, the 360 normally came out on top in side-by-side comparisons. Games like Skyrim never worked properly on the PS3, even after several patches.

So there's that.

A far worse outcome would see the XBox One having such a small market share that it ends up like the console equivalent of the Mac. In these cases, not only will the XBox One miss out on being lead SKU, some games might not even make it over at all, or much later. I never tire of seeing Mac owners shout about getting one of the best games from three years ago.

We'll see. This year will be key. My feeling is that the One has already done much of its business, snaring hardcore MS fans. It'll be interesting to see whether MS can maintain the momentum among the more lucrative "Muggle" population.

Sorry Pap, but the differences highlighted in the screenshots above didn't translate when I actually started playing. I just didn't care that one game looked a little less crisp then the other, with the games flying by at a million miles an hour I didn't have time to linger on whether the textures where slightly sharper, the overall experience was the same for me and if anything enhanced by the fact that I preferred the Xbox One controller.

Excellent. I'm glad we're finally hearing some recognition.

Why does it matter to me? I'm disappointed with MS, more than anything else.

The PS4 isn't even my lead platform. That'll be the PC. I'm in the fortunate position where I don't have to choose between PS4 and XBOX One either. Many people do, and many people will want the most powerful machine for their money, something that'll last them throughout the current console generation. For those people, the PS4 is the better fit. It's a scandal that the One has such comparative problems on cross-platform games, costs more and ships as a second-class product outside the US.

MS' plan is perfectly apparent and centered around them. They want you to have your XBox One on all the time ( probably why it takes over a minute to start from cold ). They want your other media routed through the machine. It's consistent with everything else they are trying to do; namely - construct a walled garden in a similar manner to Apple and Google. They want the XBox One to be the prism through which you do everything, and have spent a lot of money meeting their objectives and convincing the customer it's what he or she wants.

Me? I want a games console. How about you?

I want to play Mass Effect 4 and have the entertainment capability of my Xbox 360 (Sky Go, iPlayer, Youtube etc.) I'm not a hardcore gamer, I don't have the time for it. The only thing I can see missing out on with the One is online gaming with my friends if they all go for PS4's, I don't know if that's something I'm willing to compromise for yet.

And please be a good boy and don't project your disappointment with MS onto those who couldn't care less and are weighing the machines up on their own merit for their own needs. ;)
