Marino Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Graham Baker, from those great 80's teams of ours, appointed manager of newly-relegated Woking according to the Beeb website. Nice little club to cut his management teeth.
david in sweden Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Graham Baker, from those great 80's teams of ours, appointed manager of newly-relegated Woking according to the Beeb website. Nice little club to cut his management teeth. A good example of a local lad who made it to the first team (not too many of those in the past). A lad from Merry Oak who made a debut at 19 and got famous when MOTD was at the Dell (1977) and he scored a scorcher in the first minute. Stayed at the club for about 10 years though never a regular. Lawrie sold him to Man.City to fund the purchase of Peter Shilton (sorry Graham) but that WAS a good deal for Saints! Chris Nicholl bought him back in the late 1980's but he was never quite the same player and eventually succumed to injuries and quit. GOOD LUCK GRAHAM ! Give it to Ron Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Played against him at school...absolutely light years ahead of anything in our team or his. Stuffed us 3-0 which was rare as we had a good side.

Marino Posted 22 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Used to love watching him, Steve Williams and Steve Moran - the kids playing with the likes of Keegan,Channon and Boyer and not looking out of place. Wish our kids today had half their talent.

VectisSaint Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Stayed at the club for about 10 years though never a regular 1979-80 Graham was a regular in Saints' midfield, and in the 80-81 season he was a virtual ever-present making 39 appearances. 173 appearances, 33 goals in 2 spells, one of our most influential midfielders (and that is saying something). Should have achieved more but injuries blighted his career.
Toomer Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Thanks Graham Baker looked like Tintin He did a bit but his wife/young lady at the time was a cracker she worked behind the bar at The Saints Supporters Club.
Window Cleaner Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 173 appearances, 33 goals . Scored every 5 games or so then, that's striker rate nowadays. Mind you Graham was always well placed when balls dropped outside the box, thunderbolt of a shot as well, kept the ball low very well.
wokingsaints Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 nice bloke, was in temporary charge of woking and took us down, albeit not his fault. Glad he has been given the chance. there seems to be a link with saints and woking as the dodgy poodle perm glend ****erall was woking's manager for several seasons recently. Shame we have been relegated though!

Yes Vectis, I thought about that but he wasn't regular during the 10 years he was with us, (some long term players have been ) BUT nevertheless his really good, consistant spell you named were his best years. WealdSaint Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Good luck Graham.....I used to live in woking many many years ago. Do they still play in the same ground at Kingfield? As a little kid i used to dream that Woking would play Saints in the 3rd round of the FA cup. Guess it could be the first round next season, if we are still in existance
Minsk Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 I rated Graham Baker highly back in the day, but not as highly as Steve Williams. I was gutted when both of them left Saints. I seem to recall that GB was England Under 21 capt for quite some time?? Anyway, good luck to him in his new job.
