Saint_Jonny Posted 11 June, 2009 Share Posted 11 June, 2009 posted on behalf of a good friend and fellow saint fanatic! Being a fairly young supporter of the Saints I haven’t lived the truly successful era’s of this club, neither seen many of the great players to have put on the shirt, which some of you yourselves may luckily have been able to see. I often hope to myself that in my lifetime we will be a great club once again, but then again with our current situation I hope we still have a club to support. Seeing the top 4 (or sky 4) dominate every year in the top tier of English football is painful to see, knowing that substantial wealth in today’s football world is the only key in becoming a successful club, knocking my hopes of us ever winning anything major in my lifetime. But I think to myself does this really matter? When I believe the most important thing for a fan is having pride, and showing passion for your club no matter what predicament they are in, and being able to tell people you support Southampton FC with a grin on your face, this to me beats any trophy in the world. I like the phrase, ‘your club chooses you’, and not the other way round, which is apparent with some people I know who claim themselves to be ‘fans’ of the United’s, Liverpool’s and Chelsea’s, who have no connection with them at all and show little affection towards them, and also never actually seeing them play at their respective grounds. These people make me feel frustrated but also glad in a sense, that they will never be able to experience what true supporters go through, which for me is one of the best feelings in the world. If I do ever get the chance to see us lift a major trophy, of course I will be happy, but not near as happy as being apart of the club that I love. I know exactly what you mean, that feeling of supporting a club you truly love will never be experienced by people like my mate, who is a Man Utd 'fan', born in Surrey, and thought Old Trafford was in Liverpool. Great post though, I agree with everything on that, being relatively young myself. Pride, passion, saying you are a Saints fan with a grin on your face, it's what it's all about.. SOUTHAMPTON TIL I DIE!

Although I'm not the longest serving fan by a long way, I've been a Saints fan for 50 years - through good and bad years (and there were lots of those then, too). It's especially sad for older fans who remember the glory of former days - not that we won a lot of cups or championships but that over the decades we have had some truly great players wearing the Saints shirt, and a lot who stayed with the club when they might have gone elsewhere. Terry Paine, John Sydenham, Tommy Traynor, Mick Channon, Nick Holmes, Matt Le Tissier and Jason Dodd are great examples of " one club men " who served the club in over a decade and all clocked up over 400 games. Great goalscorers like Charlie Wayman, Derek Reeves, George O'Brien (Paine and Channon, too ) plus Ron Davies and Matt le Tissier who gave us some unforgetable goals - and lots of them over many seasons. Nowadays players move so much and seldom stay more than a season or two. Saints' time will come again I'm sure and I hope you'll be able to look back in 50 years and say that you were proud to be a Saints fan ! Jonny how you feel now is how many of us felt in the early 60's i still believe i have got more out of supporting my home town club through good and bad times than any 2 armchair" fan of the big

scott_saints Posted 11 June, 2009 Share Posted 11 June, 2009 Agree. I said earlier today how it makes me laugh when plastic Man U/Chelsea fans etc have the cheek to laugh at me for supporting a league one club! Sorry, but is it meant to f**king offend me? I laugh at THEM for thinking I care. Would much rather support Saints in league 1 or any league for that matter, than be a plastic arm chair fan of one of the big 4!! skintsaint Posted 11 June, 2009 Share Posted 11 June, 2009 Top 4 fans generally are boring to talk to about football, I regularly chat to a Preston & Notts Forest fan and find it far more interesting as they talk about other things than just Champions League, Premier titles and their 20m superstar players... Tac-tics Posted 11 June, 2009 Share Posted 11 June, 2009 My Chelsea mate rung me to tell me about Ronaldo & THAT fee, then started banging on about the likes of Aguero,Ribery,Zlatan, now not being funny, im excited by the likes off Rickie Lambert joining Saints. Its far more better this way, somehow
Yate Saint Posted 11 June, 2009 Share Posted 11 June, 2009 Most top four club supporters I know talk utter tripe when talking about football. Half of them don't even know who the Chairman is. If I ask someone who they support and they say Man Utd, they really have to convince me that they really do SUPPORT them.

SFC Forever Posted 11 June, 2009 Share Posted 11 June, 2009 TBF I would rather not have known that over the past decade! TBF I think a lot of us feel the same. Now we have a chance to start the long climb back to the top. It has gone full circle for me as I began watching when 6yo in 1956.The youngest of our fans have been dealt a poor hand and just need to wait as their time will come. matthieu Posted 12 June, 2009 Share Posted 12 June, 2009 I agree totally with this post. To experience the good times and for them to feel sweet, you have to experiece the bad which I, in my almost 19years of life, have experienced in quite vast quantities with Saints. Yes all the plastic manure and chelski fans may say that winning the league may be the best feeling ever to them, but after a while it must be boring, it's like anything in life, the more you do it, the shine kinda goes away. Which is why, when Saints have our glory day(s) again, it'll feel so, so great. I have experience my fair share of "abuse" from plastics and they really really do my head in, like my friend who claims to be a man utd fan, who can still only name 9 man utd players and one of them was roy keane! As I was growing up through secondary school I did feel a bit baffled as to why I was the only kid who didn't support Manure, Liverpool or Arsenal and wandered if I should switch sides, but I'm so glad I didn't. C'mon you Saints!!!
fareham saint phil Posted 12 June, 2009 Share Posted 12 June, 2009 You just have to remember the arsenal fans at cardiff, they seemed bored to be at "another" cup final, while we had a fantastic day and showed the spirit of the cup final was still alive and kicking. Plastic fans can be spotted straight away as when they tell you who they support they follow it up with "but i've supported them for years" or they tell you what a fantastic stadium they have much better than ours not that they've been just seen it on sky. rather support my team in any league than be a sellout to the big (or as someone put it Sky)
