I think it's plausible that he said "yeah ok, I'm interested, let's see what they have to say". But that's a long way from forcing through a move or being upset if it doesn't happen. Ultimately he shouldn't have signed that contract if he had ambitions to leave at this point.

He's been at Southampton for a decade. Some people would be fine with that, and that's totally fine, but a wealthy young man in his mid-20s can be forgiven for wanting to try something different in a different place. I'd probably be angling for a move to Italy rather than Birmingham but it's a reasonable position

If I was him I'd be interested in the move just for a change of scene as much as anything. Not everyone wants to spend their whole life working in the same place for the same company. Add to that the fact that Villa probably are a step up at the moment

Happily I think JWP is professional enough that we could make him stay and he would still perform. He has a long contract and I'm not convinced Villa will pay the £50m+ we'd need to sell.

What age was JWP when he finally started to convince?

I think he gets one more season. He didn't push on this year but development isn't always a linear process and he's young enough that he could have a breakthrough. Obviously running out of time though

Sure. I mainly take issue with the idea that we're not interested in him and blind to his qualities, which is more negative, club-bashing nonsense. Maybe we'll get him but I'd say there's a fair chance that another club will come with a more attractive proposition, either in terms of money or to challenge further up the table

More likely we are interested in Armstrong but the price won't come down to what we want to pay

I have to say "I told you so" to all those who wrote off England's chances against Germany, but I also have to say that for a team with 7 defensive players on the pitch, we didn't half concede a few chances. Germany are not great and I was expecting us to be more solid, though we did the business with the goals we scored

I haven't checked back but I read that this is basically what all the recent winners have done. Defensive is the way to win these days unless you are really amazing

If the system works then the two DMs should cover the full backs when they go forward. It didn't work last season without Romeu though

All those players play in different positions though where it is easier to impress as a small lad. Mings still doesn't have the ball skills to play anywhere else, so it's easy to see why his size would have meant he couldn't stay with us. It's no good for your development if you're not even able to compete for the youth teams, regardless of potential future growth
