The idea of a Solent City may well be something for the future, but let's not start breaking down the wall of resistance by getting the two city clubs to ground share. Even if Pompey and Saints were on the best of terms it wouldn't be the greatest idea. Getting fans to stadia is bad enough, when the charging is so high, but to ask one set to travel an average 19 miles, every fortnight [not 15 btw, just Google Map city centre to city centre to find out] to a city in which they have little or no association with, and the little may well be bad anyway, and you have a rather silly recipe. Add in the possible repercussions of the odd few Saints fans being around St Marys when Pompey are playing, and it all just seems so unnecessary. Perhaps in a few generations time, when the urban areas have possibly/inevitably closed the gaps even tighter [the villages and towns inbetween might oppose that, of course], there might be a call for centralising a Solent City stadium out by Segensworth roundabout. But I'm trying to find reasons here for making the change, and I'm finding it rather hard to see them. Frankly, at the moment, it's a non-issue.

Excellent..! That makes two confirmed, logically minded, fans then.

Were you agreeing or disagreeing there..?

Oh Ok, I give in. What I, or we think doesn't affect the actual team being chosen anyhow. I'd still prefer Saints winning something than losing. After all, in 15-20 years time nobody, outside of Southampton, would remember who we played, in any case.
-
I'm always staggered by threads like this. Who would you like in the next round..? Pompey and anyone else in the Premiership or Championship..? Err... no..! The obvious answer is, the easiest team to beat so that we can get to the next round with the least problems, and so get to the Cup Final, where, not unreasonably, I would hope to get the easiest team we can beat there too. Unfortunately, the chances of that happening would be slim, as we would almost certainly be the minnow of the Final. Incidentally, do you think Pompey were disappointed that they had to play Cardiff in the FA Cup Final the other year..? I doubt it very much. I mean, what do you want to do, increase your chances of winning something or losing..? Personally, I rather Saints concentrate on doing their best to get out of League One where, incidentally, there isn't a choice of opposition. So you can see, my priorities are slightly different. But if we are to take the League Cup or FA Cup seriously then I want the easiest opposition possible.
-
I think you have been very lucky that nobody has started taking the p!ss. They've all been quite restrained so far. Cue mass breakout of idiocy.

If distance within a conurbation was the only criterion, then there would be 3 London clubs at most. Not only has the idea to make economic sense to all parties involved, but the public will has to be there too. In the case of Pompey and Saints, it isn't.

But that's not really the definition, is it. The reliable definition of a UFO is that the object must be subjected to all rational explanations and alternatives, and if it can't be explained by any of those, to the smallest degree, then it just might be considered a UFO. Or you were just kidding.
-
Tbh, I question your rationale if you're posting this on TMS. Btw, I have seen, what I believe was a UFO, about 20 years ago.

My brother took his grandson to see the new 3D animated A Christmas Carol and he said he was astounded by the 3D depth. By his descriptions, I would imagine it was pretty impressive. Anyway, that's not why I'm adding to this thread. It's to comment on Garrow's Law. When I caught a trailer of this series I thought it might be pretty good. But since I missed the first couple of episodes, I didn't want to be a slave to the TV/iPlayer and just let it go. Then I friend of mine told me about it, and advised me to watch. I'm glad I did. Pretty damn good drama, although the stories are a little straightforward. I've had this opinion for some time that Costume Drama succeeds so well because the merest glance, the ill-chosen word, the slightest insult, bear enormous consequences. Whereas in dramas set in the present day the ettiquette is so blunted that all but the most blatant of scenarios fails to attract an audience. I hope for more Garrow's Law.

I think that's the best idea.

I must admit, normally it really gets up my nose if people can't spell and/or punctuate reasonably well. The odd typo, I don't have a problem with, but I hope people will make an effort to get their messages across legibly, even if it is just to show respect to other members, if they have none for themselves. However, the original post was so well written and flowed so well that it actually didn't require punctuation. I only noticed it as I finished reading, and then saw the first complaint. I was actually impressed by it. Could we now get back to the subject of the thread please..?
-
Because a lot of BBC podcasts are bloody good. I love The News Quiz myself. HIGNFY was started as a TVised version of it, way back when, although the format is reasonably different. The original Radio quiz still has the TV version beat on most occasions. Although of course, most people wouldn't know that because they think radio is just for music. Isn't that right, Deppo..?

Jeez, no offence NC, but I can't stand that smug little Vicki Butler-Henderson. She was dropped from Top Gear just as I was about to write to the Beeb, crying enough of her. She has that one trick of widening her eyes when she is about to exclaim something we all knew anyway. No thanks. Tiff's a bit smug nowadays as well. In fact they're all a bit too smug except for James May, and he's getting that way. Is it because they're all having far too much fun, and getting paid well for it too..? Err, the joke of The Stig has many good miles to go, IMO. At least he's not smug. Mind you, we wouldn't know even if he was. http://widgets.nbc.com/o/4727a250e66f9723/4b0d946a2c924efb/4727a250e66f9723/6c49049d/-cpid/bf8e4f2a82f453d0

Couldn't listen to Chris Temple's interview last night, as I was called away, but AP got it exactly right again. Is this the first manager since WGS [and perhaps Nigel Pearson] to actually be watching/tuning in to the same match as the rest of us..? I particularly liked the line: "...the sort of game that Southampton, over the last twenty years, not [just] the last couple of years, would have lost..." And he's right again. Saints have never liked the ugly games, in that time, and almost always have come off worse, whatever the division or competition. WGS era, perhaps an exception. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/southampton/8377774.stm

Did I hear once again of an opposition manager, being interviewed after the match, saying we were the best team they had encountered..?

Hanco.ck What can you do with the weather..? So I watched this Will Smith film a couple of nights ago. Anything with Will Smith in it has a chance of being watchable, and this one's no different. The story is pretty wafer thin, but then that's not what it's about. It's about the actors looking good on screen, which they do, and the masses of CGI mean that they are able to do some impressive things too. It's also a bit of a moral tale too. Have faith in your neighbour, because there is good in surprising places. But that's about it. It was fun, and I can sort of understand why it was extremely successful. Isn't everything involving Will Smith successful..? 6/10
