Correct, but in modern houses you'll find brown, red, black, blue and earth alongside each other. And there's only 1 neutral most of the time. It's a minefield

If faced with only red and black, black is neutral. When there's a blue involved it is often the neutral and black is another live on the ring. This usually only happens when there are two switches in the room for the same light (like you get at the bottom and top of the stairs) or multiple lights on the same switch. It's all very confusing and therefore don't quote me on that either.
