  1. Poor old lady. What a horrible way to die
  2. You know - I have been having a lot of nightmares lately, now I come to think of it
  3. Absolutely
  4. Ah thanks - you've cleared up the 'David' issue for me. It was David Armstrong! His lad used to kick a ball around with my boy back then. My friend's daughter used to go out with Robin Smith too - years ago of course. But I didn't know the Smith boys had lived in the close as well. My parents lived there from 1978 until my father died about 12 years ago.
  5. Aah you're thinking of John Burke! No he wasn't my dad but yes, that close. No, we didn't have a swimming pool but lots of other houses in the close did. Am I right that David Peach lived in the close too?
  6. Could be a recipe for disaster....
  7. Wycombe Wanderers (I don't have a Premiership favourite - only any team playing Portsmuff). It's not quite my nearest - I guess Oxford and Cheltenham are - but I lived in High Wycombe for many years and we've watched them many times past and present. If we get relegated this season and they get promoted (as seems likely) I'll be able to watch my two favourite teams play each other
  8. Yep - sensible thing to do :smt045
  9. Then it's political, Jill, but not Political. How do you decide what's 'right'?
  10. I've just realised - 'Ponty' isn't short for 'Pontefract' at all, is it? pontificate verb 1. administer a pontifical office 2. talk in a dogmatic and pompous manner; e.g. "The new professor always pontificates" :D but in a friendly way, of course, and recognising the pot, kettle, black irony too.
  11. He may have moved since but I THINK he used to live in the same close as my parents. If so, my father built his house as well as Micky Channon's
  12. I've not tried them. Please tell me what they taste like - I'm sure you've eaten a few in your time.
  13. I've forgotten - was it David Armstrong or David Peach who lived in Fair Oak?
  14. I beg to differ. It's my view that politics colour everyones' judgements, even if they don't think of it that way. Every time anyone makes a conscious decision or adopts a particular stance about a situation, s/he is making a political decision (with a small p). You could also call it a moral decision, a religious decision etc. There are many issues not covered by Political agendae that could be considered to be covered by political agendae.
  15. Of course, I meant POLITICAL agenda - since I'm often accused of using said agenda to colour my views on everything. Which I don't.
  16. Actually I don't think you are, TBH. I was quite surprised at some of the information in there. You're right to suspect that it is probably anti-3rd runway, but you still might learn something about the economics of the issue. I did. But then I'm open-minded and prepared to consider ALL the facts, not just the ones that suit my agenda, especially as I don't yet have one on this topic.
  17. Do you remember there used to be a chain of shops called 'Knobs and Knockers' - they sold - errr ummm - knobs and knockers.
  18. I'm undecided about the pros and cons of this issue but I was interested to read this article in the Guardian today: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/jan/14/aviation-jobs-heathrow-baa Quite a long article, but well worth a read - if you're open-minded.
  19. Not the photocopiers, I hope
  20. Keep rocking from middle to right too much and you'll fall over
  21. I'm really enjoying these posts. But do you know what saddens me? Our players these days aren't around long enough to be come part of our community. All the tales on here show that in the 'old days' the players were to be seen around and about and in the area for years. There's just not the same connection these days, it seems. If anyone can prove me wrong, I'd love to hear some good tales about today's players.
  22. I have some too that are black. I wear them because I am taller than my (work) partner and I don't want him to feel inferior if I wear heels
  23. Funny then, that according to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita the UK is significantly stronger than either France or Germany, for example. You might find this easier to read: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/eco_eur_cou_by_gdp_per_cap_gdp_per_cap-european-countries-gdp-per-capita
  24. When we were looking to move back 'home', one of the houses we looked at was Terry Paine's in Bitterne Park. He was there when we looked round and he showed us his trophy cabinet. He was a real ladies' man
