Marketisation has made universities completely different to when we studied there regardless when they were part of the public sector landscape which is not the case these days. The decisions they make now are about attracting students, both domestic and international (as these pay much higher fees) and research funding, both public and commercial, plus spin outs. No time to act on any historic inclinations around ideologies, because with no capital grants around these days, they have to raise significant funds to repay borrowings on new buildings/labs and re-invest. Effectively, they are large not for profits with marketisation elements. In smaller and medium-sized towns, expansion has probably been too much and you get a clash of gown and town, but generally they’re an important part of local economies.

Depends where you went - Sussex, Essex, possibly LSE of old (not now) known to be left wing. Exeter, Royal Holloway, Warwick - the biggest student societies were Conservatives and the academic payroll reflect this.

Agree on both fronts although it doesn’t mean that will translate directly into seats. I suspect Reform will pile up some whopping majorities in some seats especially north, NE and Midlands but split the vote in others which will lead to Lib Dem, Green and some Labour victories.

Thought I’d post a healthier antidote to all of the politics-related threads on The Lounge. Lots of walks throughout the year that I’ll post pictures of from Cotswolds, Forest of Dean, Severn Estuary, Brecon Beacons and beyond. No worries. Certain there’s footage I’ve never seen before and the quality is very decent. Other details I noticed are the barking dogs at the Chelsea game. My parents lived near the Dell prior to buying a house in Woolston and remember saying there was loads of trouble before, at and after that game. Also McCalliog’s free kick v Bradford in front of their original main stand and a response to our celebrating away fans audible of ‘you’re going to get your fucking heads kicked in’. Their Ointment Crew was one of the most notorious in the lower leagues.

Sunderland hammered at the Dell in 1975. Who was there for some of these games then and and what are your memories?
