I know of many companies run by utter b*stards that are extremely succesful. The industry I operate in is macho and very ego driven, not dissimilar to football. You don't need to tell me, i'm an area sales manager! You make a good point but as I said, balance can often be a good thing. My company has just seen someone new come in at executive level and the effect it's had is remarkable. Familiarity is preferable, stagnation is unforgivable.
