He never quite pressed on like he should have done. Playing 2nd fiddle to Cole at club and country level really hurt his career. And he didn't learn his lesson by going to Man City.

Which is why people saying, 'we should have brought players for a relegation battle in the summer' is stupid. We're much better off buying quality than 'prem experience' who have been knocking around the lower clubs for the last few years.

Once we sorted out our keeper situation, we've been running at midtable form...I expect this is where Cortese was expecting us to be.

But Cortese was never expecting us to be fighting for relegation which is why he funded the transfer. Not a ridiculous thing to want to sign the best players possible for us to push on. And he'll be better next season because of it.
