One of the issues the FA has always quoted when the lack of competent refs is brought up is that the abuse they get doesn't make it a popular career choice. 4 years solid of a combination of sh*te football and terrible results makes it pretty impossible to get excited about going anymore, let alone get a proper atmosphere going.
