Just back from Morocco, where they have largely escaped the virus so far. A friend sent me this https://imgur.com/a/7TPgQuN

What the WHO DG said was “Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died,” - which is a very different thing. If you tested a random population of say 50,000 people you would detect far more cases which would give you a different death rate. Don't disagree. The main problem with COVID19 compared with flu is its new, the data is lacking so countries are, sensibly, operating on the precautionary principle. That is what is causing the disruption
-
We dont actuallyt know that. In most countries the only people being tested are those with symptoms severe enough to warrant hospital treatment - so of course the death rate appears much higher.
-
I'm not qualified to critique the different approaches - but it seems to me that the Chinese / Taiwanese / Italian approach buys you more time to get health services prepared. Matt Hancock was saying this morning the UK only has 5,000 ventilators, needs "many more times that number" and is desperately trying to source more and train staff to use them. Delaying the peak till month 9 rather than month 4 would be an enormous help presumably.

Nope. Igsey said it was untrue. He was speculating

Better tell the UK's Chief Scientific Adviser that. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/13/coronavirus-outbreak-likely-annual-virus-says-governments-chief/

Yep and the number of new infections have dropped off a cliff. It was cold in December and January when infections were raging
-
I think the idea is to contain it until the weather improves and new infections drop off naturally. Its a cold weather virus like flu. It cant live outside the body in temperatures above 17c and thats why Morocco have had almost zero infections

Hm. The IPCC is made up of members / delegates nominated by each of the 195 member countries. If they agree on anthropogenic climate change it’s because either 1. All 195 countries are corrupt or 2. They agree on the science. I know which one I’m going for.

Flannel. His arguments are toothless so not exactly bites, just flannel to distract from more pointless idiocy -
It’s not big news here in Morocco and most of the western media give you news biased to your location
-
How did you arrive at that conclusion?

It was obvious to anyone, although unsurprisingly not to you that Shurlocks post was about taxation and spending. Re nationalisation that would have reduced the budget deficit because the profits of the utilities to be nationalised are higher than the costs of borrowing -
Carbon wise Mile per mile flying is roughly similar to one person in a car. Four people in a plane compared with four in a car is obviously four times worse. The real problem is that flying makes travelling huge distances more attractive, so they do it more. People often take two winter breaks to the sun. If you had to drive 6,000 miles you wouldn’t do it. You’d go to Cornwall or stay home instead.

Where did they say the bit about us being wiped out in 11 years?

None of the major brands at my local Tesco today. Only Tesco own brand with a choice of Shea Butter or Coconut Oil. Wtf is that about? Who wants greased toilet paper?

The average age of people dying from corona virus in Italy is 81.

Exactly. A politician standing election decided he wasn’t going to let the electorate see him flounder. Being accountable to the electorate is a corner stone of democracy. It’s not about what Johnson wants. It’s about being prepared to subject yourself to scrutiny -

I had forgotten about his stint as FM. Blotted it out from my memory perhaps, cringeworthy as it was. The next Labour manifesto will be much more mainstream. Most members and unions know that's what is needed to get elected and also why Starmer rather than Long-Bailey is leading so clearly. The next election is very unlikely to be 4.5 years away. -

I agree Johnson is very personable and Starmer is pretty much charisma free. But in the long run its competency which counts. Johnson was uniquely fortunate in the circumstances in which he got elected. His predecessor May was hopeless, his opposition in Corbyn and Swinson were hopeless and he (Johnson) had never been a minister before so could make huge claims without anyone examining his track record. That combination of factors wont arise again. In four years time the next election will be decided by reality of delivery (or not) rather than just promises. Starmer isnt perfect, but unless Johnson has a stellar term it will be enough to win - if indeed they both contest the election.
