Mark Duggan family reacts with fury to inquest verdict of lawful killing
buctootim replied to John B's topic in The Lounge
You might be right - but a jury considered all the evidence and decided that despite the missing gun the killing was justified. I don't know exactly how or why they came to that conclusion but I'm happy they did in a reasonable way. If you were on the Jury and heard all the evidence and circumstances you might have come to same conclusion too. -
Is Lambert the only Saints legend since Le Tiss
buctootim replied to ozzmeister's topic in The Saints
We haven't had any legends since MLT imo. Sure RL was great for us for three seasons and instrumental in getting us promoted, our most standout player in that time - but lets face it he doesn't really compare to World Cup Winner Paine or Shilton - 125 caps for England and played 5 years for Saints in his prime or one club man MLT who did things no-one else could. -

But they knew he had a gun in the car and had information he was on his way to shoot someone - ie he was armed and capable of using it. Presumably the officer pulling the trigger didnt know he'd thrown the gun out of the car. -
Its like admiring the blokes who build model ships out of matchsticks though. You can recognise the dedication and skill and still think "what a ****ing dull ****".

Why would you give an 18 month contract to a striker who has only played 42 games in the past 2.5 years and scored 2 goals. Many CBs score more than that a season.

Everyone knows the de Menezes case was a **** up - a case of mistaken identity and a series of unfortunate coincidences / errors at a time when the police where understandably concerned about suicide bombers on the tube. There are around 4,400 armed response call outs in London every year. The fact we are still talking about the de Menezes incident from eight years ago shows how rare errors are. -
Thats near Swansea

Shorey used to be a good PL player. Two caps for England and still only 32 - but been released by three clubs in the past two years. Wonder whether he will be great for them, or another has been dragging them down.

Is homeownership as opposed to renting still a no-brainer?
buctootim replied to Halo Stickman's topic in The Lounge
In many (most?) other countries the housing market in general is less tight with more choice. I'd happily rent long term in the US or Germany for example. The standards tends to be higher and there is more security. In Britain you have to be lucky to find a place which isnt a bit crappy - and if it is good its likely to be a short term rent and the owner wants it back within a year. In Minnesota I stayed in a nice aircon 2 bed 1000sq feet (100sqm) house for a month, all bills included, for less than £400. In the UK you mostly cant find 'stay as short or as long as you want' places and if you do they'd be four times the price. -
Mount Dora Alcoholics Anonymous will have a Christmas party at 6 p.m....... Members should take a covered dish and a $2 gift for Santa to pass out.

There's a balance to be struck. I'd never want us to become like the US where they are prepared to fire at cars with kids in them for failing to stop - but the endless inquiries and hand wringing about shootings involving armed criminal is plain stupid. -
Bring her out for a few raunchy weekends. Music in Berlin, breakfast in bed and skiing in Bavaria has got to be more of a turn on than Shirley Warren and Nandos

Creating a life in which you're happy is a long term game. You're more likely to gain by staying Germany, gaining more experience and track record and spending those funds you have on flights, hotels and good restaurants than being seen to fail at an assignment (thats what new employers will think) and end up spending your cash on rent, baked beans and travelling to interviews.

Jesus its only four months. Make a bit of effort during that rime to accommodate the job and the woman and you'll find out if both are worth it. Do you think she'll be massively attracted to an out of work, skint bloke hanging around all day - or some jet setting dynamo flying in at weekends to see her and bringing her out to Germany.

Global warming really is happening... (well, duh!)

Hmm. Who to believe? A piece by a Lord who was Chairman of Northern Rock 2004-07 when it made its bad decisions, caused Britain's first run on a bank for 150 years and went bust - or the UN, US EPA and almost everybody else? Tricky. Just FYI Ocean acidification is important mainly for creatures which make their shells from dissolved calcium. A few points difference in ph means they cant make the shell. People and other animals like shellfish. http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/critical-issues-ocean-acidification/ http://www.unesco.org/new/en/natural-sciences/ioc-oceans/priority-areas/rio-20-ocean/blueprint-for-the-future-we-want/ocean-acidification/ http://www.epa.gov/acidrain/effects/forests.html -
Look on the bright side. You're mortgage free now.

This really. Also Cortese's micro management would be really wearing to work under. 18 months, repair your reputation and get out makes sense.

He's accustomed to being in sweaty close proximity sharing bunks with over 100 lonesome men. That lifestyle will cost you a fortune in civvy street.

Actual building costs constitute only around 35% of the price of a new house. Check your house insurance for the costs of rebuilding and then compare that to its market value.
-
But those high prices get back to the issue of lack of development (and admittedly excess of foreign investment buyers in London). Build more so supply is nearer to demand and prices will fall and standards will rise.
-
Those planned communities leave me cold too - but some will like them, so they will be part of the solution. The problem imo with so much new build is that because there is so little of it and demand is so high developers can anything - small, poor quality homes in crappy locations. Not everbody wants only a house with a spacious garden. Vauxhall isnt the smartest place to be but Id swap my place for a large flat with sweeping views of London and the river. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/tallest-apartment-block-in-europe-to-be-built-in-vauxhall-and-will-tower-above-thames-8664313.html
-
Exactly this. I really don't get why all parties don't put serious effort into house building. It would make housing more affordable, reduce household debt, increase disposable income / increase standard of living and reduce the housing benefit bill. Help to Buy achieves the exact opposite of all those things.
-
So all the Irish and Spanish have flooded into Britain - spurning their homelands excess cheap housing. However if we built more houses then people would flock here to take advantage of the cheap houses they weren't impressed by at home? Righto, I'll mark you down with Guided Missile in the "lost the the plot but not to worry he wasn't actively searching for it anyway" file.

"The most commonly used way to measure poverty is based on incomes. A person is considered poor if his or her income level falls below some minimum level necessary to meet basic needs. This minimum level is usually called the "poverty line". What is necessary to satisfy basic needs varies across time and societies. Therefore, poverty lines vary in time and place, and each country uses lines which are appropriate to its level of development, societal norms and values." The World Bank
