Global warming really is happening... (well, duh!)

Thorium reactors aren't new. There was a test facility in the US in the late 1960s. Part the reason they didn't take off before is because they aren't any good for producing weapons grade plutonium - which was a big factor in the 1960s-80s. I'd be happy to see Thorium reactors produced if the technical difficulties could be overcome. We need investment in renewables - but also need a stable core to generation capacity as part of the mix. -
"The British are actively hostile towards young people"

There was another report a few days ago talking about how people now call the police about 'anti social behaviour' which 25 years ago would have been normal youth activities. The single biggest thing we need to do urgently is build 2 million decent sized new houses and bring the price of buying and renting down. Being trapped in parental homes or paying such a high percentage of income on rent / mortgage that other reasonable expectations for a working person - like holidays, socialising, cars become impossible is a major quality of life blight for much, maybe most, of the population. -
Yep (but its a bit rich when you're a Brit in South Africa....)

Its a fair point Lord D. A number of climate scientists think we would now be entering a new mini ice age now if it wasn't for man made climate change. Thats not an argument for relaxing on emissions though since even current attempts are to limit global temperature rises to 2 degrees, and we will likely miss that target. No-one is even talking about reducing temperatures. If anything it underlines the importance of getting a grip on emissions - if we are managing to drive up temperatures despite a falling baseline. Eventually we will be able to get to a Goldilocks balance of emissions - not too warm not too cold - but we are a long way from that now. -

I wouldn't hold your breath for a thought out response from GM Badger. They don't even need to run out. A number of projections show that the increasing demand for hydrocarbons combined with increasing costs of extracting them (as new reserves are ever deeper and more inaccessible) show that wind and solar will be cheaper within 20 years. Since your typical power plant will take 5 years from the drawing board to commissioning and will then have an operational life of 40 years + it doesn't take much to work out which kind of power generation will be cheaper over its whole life. -

Which is why the Cameron has, probably rightly, refused to rule out any future prosecutions even though he knows there is a de facto moratorium. If you declare a policy its bound to be divisive, if you just carry on without new prosecutions but saying nothing its less contentious. -

Not sure where you got that impression - the whole point of changing the propellants in aerosols and refridgerants in air con / fridges was in order to repair the hole - which is starting to happen. The demonstrable fact that man can cause atmospheric damage on a global scale and that the damage can be reversed by changing behaviour just a little is a really uncomfortable fact for climate change deniers. -

Help him by quoting from the Daily Mail? Makes total sense to you and St George the 'challenged' duo. Heres the easy guide. Every year the Greenland ice sheet partially melts in the summer and expands in the winter. The trend is down. The summer of 2012 saw the least ice cover ever recorded due to an extremely warm Arctic summer. Inevitably, unless 2013 was also a record breaking year, the ice cover will be more in 2013 than 2012. That doesn't alter the downward trend. Clear? -

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that naked newscaster has clothes on. Its like those 'buy one get one free' packets of cheap bacon for only £3.90, iffy advertising. Its going to be "Im naked apart from my cacks but have got an arm across my chest and my legs double crossed so you cant see anything apart from the nape of my pullover. -

The PWC study is all about practical elements like housing costs, commuting times etc - housing tends to be cheaper in ugly places. Southampton planners have so much to answer for. In places like Brighton and Cambridge the council impose high design standards. In Southampton the just seem grateful to anyone whho wants to build anything. West Quay is pretty good but most of the post war developments are pig awful.

I was having lunch at work with a really attractive consultant in her mid thirties. She apologised for being late - explaining very matter of fact over the mashed potato that her last patient - a very camp gay guy in his 50s turned up without his semen sample which she needed to measure his viral load and said he wasnty able to produce one in the clinics booth used for the purpose. "So I got him to pull his trousers down, inserted my finger and tickled his prostate, it only took about 30 seconds, but he developed a major crisis and wanted to talk to me for ages about how he'd never come with a woman before and did it mean he'd turned and was his whole life to date was a sham? (I think the answer was "no"). As an excuse for being late for lunch that was pretty special and I've always envied that guy getting her to make him come for nothing on the NHS. -

For one three month snapshot, but much less than countries like Japan on an annual basis (2.6%pa). With year on year growth at 1.5% Britain was only marginally above the OECD average of 1.4%. Nearly six years from the onset of recession growth remains well below the long term norm.
