Pardew has said so in interviews on Saints player. Doesn't take a genius to work out have large numbers of professionals not playing will dampen moral. Also harder to train such a large number. When you mutually agree to pay up a players contract it is very often for less than the value of the wages as the player can have a fresh start and find a club that will pay him for the same period. So it would save Saints a little money.
