But were they still able to kick long in open play? If they weren't able to do a goal kick how could they do the former? Not being able to kick long in open play causes issues if the keeper is put under pressure and his short passing options are closed down.

That doesn't really hold up, as there are occasions in open play where keepers need to kick long and not doing so puts the team under pressure.
