  1. I mis-spoke. Should have said 1948!

  4. He drives a vintage Porsche so must be a great guy
  5. We have different opinions on this. I think there is a very big economic issue
  6. That's daft!
  7. I am aware of the growing presure for WSL teams to play at their home club Stadia, e.g Aresenal women play all their home fixtures at the Emirates, but they average 25k +/- crowds so they can probably break even on operating cost v income from gate receipts. The lure of SMS might lift attendances for Saints women to maybe 7k (?) gates but surely it will not be economically sustainabale to use SMS even then. Important fixtures for the youth sides which amount to 2/3 games per season are probably subsidised by the SFC.
  8. Hardly making a case to play many matches at SMS.
  9. Sorry Will but I haven't a clue what you are rabbiting on about. A peculiar post.
  10. Well NO, some of us with longer memories and experience will recall that Pompey won Division 1 twice just after WW2 in 1948-49 and 1949-50. They were also runners up in the following year. Their midfield of Scoular, Frogatt and Dickinson drove that success and was legendary at the time. Also, in those days Saints fans could attend matches at Fratton Park without being clobbered by rival fans, indeed many locals supported both teams! We've never quite matched that achievement so credit where it is due.
  11. It seems Still has his favourite already so expect Archer, Stephens & Fraser to start. Charles, Downes & Robinson deserve to start so only 4 outfield positions up for grabs. THB for sure, Roerslev, Jelert almost certainly so Jander or Azaz?
  12. Nothing resentful in my judgement, Jay Robinson has come flying out of the blocks at full speed from nowhere without hype or fanfare and has taken most of us by complete surprise. He has been called up by the England Under 18 squad so it's not just us admirers saying he is a possible star in the making. With Tyler it has become difficult to make a true assessment of his real potential beacause of the inflated rhetoric that surrounds every move the lad makes. Probability is the two kids are very much on a par so their future successes may come down to oppurtunity and hard graft which is why I back Robinson.
  13. Robinson will be the better player. He works harder, is difficult to knock off the ball when running at defences weaving his way past opposition players and he works much harder when tracking back. He also seems stronger and more robust. He could be the new Bale which will not be necessarily a good thing for us when the vultures come sniffing.
  14. Fake news, gotta be.
  15. The first match at The Dell was played on 3rd September 1898. It was a Southern League Division One game between Southampton and Brighton United. A crowd of 6,500 attended the match. Southampton won 4 – 1 Key moments: the first goal was scored by Watty Keay following some fine setup play by Tom Smith Southampton scorers: Abe Hartley, Jim McKenzie, Tom Smith Roddy Mcleod scored Brighton United's only goal the Mayor of Southampton ceremonially kicked off the match Shortly after Brighton fell behind, their midfielder Willie McArthur was injured (a kick to the jaw) and had to be hospitalised. Brighton earned some praise for their efforts!
  16. More chance of Western Shore being classified as an area of outstanding beauty.
  17. This needs to be set in its proper context. The big clubs in the top leagues of Europe (for example) compete in a global market for the most promising young talent on the planet, they have academies that are staffed by probably the best youth coaches available to develop that talent and probably have the best facities to match. We have to be realistic about the limitations of Staplewood in terms of its budget, its facilities, who it can attract and its ability to develop that talent. Why would we be surpirsed that in the large part we can only attract kids of limited potential (left overs?) who are destined to end up in lesser leagues. Occasionally it may unearth a future star but the academies of the big clubs seemingly churn out endless conveyor belts full of future stars. For context, four or five of Man City's academy graduates are playing for us in the Championship when their expectation woud have been to play for City in the Premier League. Only the odd one or two ever make it to the first team up there as well.
  18. Polite reminder - at the moment we are the fourth best club out of four on the south coast. [Nobody counts Plymouth, Exeter or Torquay as south coast, they're in the West Country]
  19. Pretty much a bus full getting off our bus 🥺 Hope we have eleven players left to field a full team against Portsmouth. Trouble is when the two teams march out in two weeks time we won't know which team is which as we won't be able to recognise any of them.
  20. Eric Morecombe & Ernie Wise teasing guest Maestro Andre Previn at that time Chief Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra
  21. Very poor performances from both sides in an ugly, foul ridden match. Especially in the first quarter of the match Watford were in our faces all the time, over-physical and fouling at virtually every touch. "Dirty sods" came to my mind more than once! Apart from 'getting the ball in the net' we seemed to have no discernible game plan at all although arguably the early physicality of Watford probably knocked us out of our stride so much that we never recoverd and got going. We just let the B's (!) dictate the pace and style of the game. Poor team selection didn't help. Azaz was okay on his debut but needs to work much harder off the ball, not just stand around and watch when he loses it. Robinson as we are beginning to expect was a bundle of energy and determination but he still needs to learn how to channel his enthusiasm better. Taylor Harwood-Bellis was out of postion on the left side of the back three and seemed out of sorts. He's probably looking at the exit door and hoping somebody will come in for him tomorrow. It's still early days to pronounce judgement but the clock is ticking; on this showing Will Still needs to show us what all the hype was about " 'cos at the moment it ain't looking great". Anybody know what the touchline bust up was all about after the fianl whistle?
  22. Answer to Header - Poor. I'm sick of the managerial bullshit about building for the future by growing our own stars from the Academy or bringing in raw yoiung talent and improving it. As soon as we have a few decent young players emerging from this process we go and sell them at the first sight of a newly minted fiver. I am sick of being lied to time after time.
