  1. That was about what I thought, excusing Foreman's comeback. It's no real surprise that the heavyweight golden era occured at a time when they were lighter. In fact I'd be in favour of having a super heavy weight division that could be safely ignored.
  2. Sorry but that was pure pantomime and almost reminiscent of the ridiculous wrestling stuff. It was designed to sell tickets but I don't think this fight needs that.
  3. I've only read this page of the thread (thank god) but are people really, honestly questioning Bridge's talent? Really? Whether we need him, or whether left back is a priority is irrelevant but Bridge was and is class. I'm all for opinions but to slag him off and say he wouldn't improve the team is laughable.
  4. Who says they are respected? A belief in a supernatural (at best) being doesn't earn respect. Hell (excuse the pun) I figured we may as well do some religion bashing on this thread as well. Obviously it's such a stupid idea and won't happen but if Gove actually gets any parents in to cover classes has he explained what they would do? My guess is not much good.
  5. I think this why most boxing fans want Haye to win - because it might lead the way for lighter, more mobile and more exciting boxers in the heavyweight division. I don't have the facts to hand but what weights did Ali, Foreman and Frazier fight at? I suspect it was probably around the 15/16 stone mark?
  6. Less than a week to go now and should be a great fight. Predictions anyone? I find this a really tough one to predict a winner and as it's in Germany Haye really won't want it to go to the cards. I'm switching between the two of them but one thing stands out for me and that's Haye's trainer, Adam Booth. The guy seems to consistently pick the right strategy for any boxer and could be the difference. The heavyweight division certainly needs a Haye win though - I'm tired of seeing fat, bloated, over blown lumps hugging each other from round 4 onwards.
  7. And personally I despise you for having such a judgemental attitude. There was a time when an old fella like you would respect someone else's opinion even if you disagreed with it. Not any more it seems. Get a grip you OAP Rambo, so you went out and followed someone who wanted to look at your shed? BFD, well done, feel free to now criticise anyone who either can't or isn't brave enough to do that.
  8. And Labour don't have a monopoly on wisdom either - I don't vote for them. In many cases comparing the tories and Labour is like comparing chalk with chalk and in any case it's an irrelevancy.
  9. I'd certainly hope so, although I also realise that having kids wouldn't turn me into a one man army either. Some of the quotes on here - invade my house and you die! Well, it's nice to think that but I'm not sure it's an entirely sensible or realistic viewpoint. Of course this is an aside and not related to the OP particularly but most burglaries are not violent - I'm not sure I'd want to provoke one that led to it and consequently actually put at risk my fictional kids.
  10. Working in the private sector doesn't give you a monopoly on either financial hardship or realism. The difference is that the public sector is more organised and better equipped to argue against changes to pensions that are either unjustified, unfair or can be financed elsewhere. This why this thread has been dominated by the "I've got it harder" brigade - it's because some people resent that others can actually protest and make a difference. The argument shouldn't be that we should all meekly accept what we're told - we should all be pressing for the preservation of rights that we signed up for when we took the job. If some people have the ability to do that then fair play. I don't buy into the argument that we can't afford it - we can.
  11. I'd also add that said selfish people can belong to any social class before anyone starts with that particular issue.
  12. Yep, would have liked to see him in the first team as well as that Spanish winger (forget his name). The Russian/Ukranian fella Pereplotkin had a fair amount of hype as well. I assume they've all had average careers though?
  13. I hardly ever bet on Saints but I don't think 5/1 is great, as others have said 10/1 is more realistic and the pompey one looks a better bet as well. Incidentally I did make enough in two months of betting to cover the price of a S/T which is handy. Who needs an installment plan eh?
  14. I suspect that until you are in that situation most people wouldn't know what they would do. It's all very well saying I'd kill 'em, tear 'em apart, garrotte them with a shoelace, slowly burn them to death over a toaster etc etc but the fact is I simply don't know. I suspect I would cower under the covers and only find out the damage in the morning. At which point I would tell myself that if only I'd been awake I would have confronted them, killed them, garrotted them with a shoelace etc etc.
  15. Too early to make any decision over whether this was reasonable force or not - not least because we don't actually know if it was the homeowner who did the stabbing or not. It could just as easily be the burglars fighting amongst themselves or an accident. We don't know where the stabbing took place, we don't know why the burglary was taking place at this particular property, we don't know if the burglars were known to the residents, we don't know if this was gang or drug related, we don't know if the murder weapon has been identified and who owned it. Far too easy to make snap judgements but I think I'll wait until some more facts come out.
  16. In terms of fan expectation neither Pahars or Ekelund were low key. I'll give you Marsden though.
  17. Have to be honest, based on what I've seen, I wouldn't pay 2.8M for Sharp. That said, I've really not seen that much of him and Adkins will certainly know a lot about him so, if the rumours are true, then you have to back the manager on this one.
  18. Can't say I've heard of him but anyone who has either influenced or worked with Billy Bragg, Eliza & Martin Carthy has to have something about them. RIP. That article does show how close knit (or incestuous) the folk scene can be.
  19. To be honest I haven't been Cortese's biggest fan but this kind of thing makes me happy. There's a lot of stupid prices being quoted for average players - we do need to strengthen but we don't need to spend over the top for them. If we're ****ing off agents then we're probably doing something right and didn't Blackpool refuse to deal with agents? Didn't do them any harm and I'd guess we're not being as extreme as that anyway. I think we will get better players in, but at this level we still have no guarantee that more money = better player.
  20. Never really rated her "dinner party" style music, though she's probably talented. Turning up like that is an embarassment though.
  21. And Blatter worries why people don't think FIFA are serious about tackling corruption? If anything this makes them and Warner look even more guilty. Warner will probably be back in a couple of years as well. I'd definitely support boycotting the Quatar World Cup - it's going to be a joke tournament and they should never have got it.
  22. Great idea and maybe we can combine the main board into just one football thread as well? Honestly, what did you expect from a thread with a title like this one has? Of course there will be a degree of tribalism but there are also hidden amongst that some good points. I think for the most part this hasn't been particularly tribal, although obviously you can tell where sympathies lie. If you don't like it then don't read it. Quite simple really.
  23. That does sound hard, I hope you enjoyed the day.
  24. And no one has said any different, have they?
