So you agree hereditary power is wrong? And don't give the argument that it's never used....in that case there would be no point in having it.
-
I'd ask the question then - if they're not used should they be removed?, or do you believe in keeping them in the hands of someone purely by the lottery of birth?
-
Erm, when everyone agrees with me....it's taken long enough with you so not for a while yet....
-
WTF? come up with an argument at least!
-
OK I win. Cheers, and don't forget to tug your forelock before bedtime.

Answer the question. They have constitutional power whether they use it or not by the lottery of birth - is that right?
-
They actually do have power (even if they don't use it) but obviously you think that the british royal family can have the ability to exercise those powers if they see fit purely by the right of birth then? You believe that just because of the lottery of birth they are best positioned to dispose of those powers? And if you believe they don't use them and should never use them then they should be removed, yes?
-
So you'd agree with removing the constitutional powers they do have?
-
But you agree that hereditary power is stupid right?
-
What we would replace a monarchy would be a separate argument though. Do we actually need a head of state? If we do then I'd rather it was an accountable and elected official who could be removed if they ****ed up. Having one purely by birthright? Now that's ****ing mad and so are you.
-
What a complete capitulation of argument. There's no reason why they should be here forever - other countries have removed monarchical power, Japan being one of them. Why shouldn't we at least argue that this should be removed as well?
-
And they could do all that without having hereditary powers couldn't they? And by having those powers (even if they don't use them) they harm our arguments when trying to spread democracy. Oh and I'm pretty sure a royal appointed official dismissed the Australian democratically elected PM in the mid 70's so it's not like they're totally toothless. Bottom line though is that any monarchy is undemocratic and the very idea of divine right to rule is just stupid. Anyone who defends the monarchy also defends this absurd concept.

This thread is hilarious. FWIW I haven't noticed anyone doing anything different to any other bank holiday.

No idea if this has been posted but made me laugh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l39uxMe6plc Oh and Kate's dress was rubbish - needs more royal cleavage. -
Sex? I've tried my hand at it.

I liked a lot of his earlier stuff but got a bit bored of the later output. White Blood Cells is still a good album though..... Seriously though, RIP Jack White.

Agree with both of these opinions. When these super injunctions are used to protect privacy and basically just stop gossip getting in the media then I think they're great but not when they protect corporations from covering up what is in the public interest to know. The Corporation book and film are interesting in explaining how corporations use laws that are designed for individuals and worth a look. As for Andrew Marr being a hypocrite then that's only if he's criticised others for using them, or advocated scrapping them. Has he done that before? I haven't checked.

I like Huddersfield and hope they go up (via the play offs obviously!). We were in the same position last season when we were trying to get play offs and they kept winning so maybe it's our turn now. We've had two outstanding turnarounds now with MK Dons and Brighton so hopefully it's our season!

Finished shades of grey yesterday. It was OK and did get better but it took so long to set up the world in which it's created that the story suffered a bit. It is a clever book but not as good as I'd hoped it would be. Snowman was an enjoyable read though.

Very sad. Worst companion has to be Bonnie Langford though?

I'm too busy mourning Marcus to even think about a street party. The very idea of celebrating the marriage of two people I don't know when I'm busy mourning someone else I don't know makes me sick.

Tough start to the season for Richardson and maybe that's affected him but he hasn't impressed me in the way, say, Dickson has on the other side. There's not much between either RB but I'd be happier with Butterfield.

Patrick Wolf - This City, has to be the most annoying song in ages. I absolutely hate it and yet it plays in my head constantly in fact probably the most annoying song since Edwyn Collins "Girl like you". Anyone else got a song stuck in their head that they detest?
