The official unofficial January transfer targets thread..
revolution saint replied to SB's topic in The Saints
Always thought Kris Commons looked a decent player but can't say I've seen much of him recently. Certainly looked a good prospect when he first started. -
Jelle Vossen from Genk? Bit of a long shot but there were rumours during the summer and Genk are out of the Chump League now, although still in the UEFA cup. Bit of company for SDR and I'm sure he could sell the club to Vossen.

Well looks my source was wrong then, sorry about that. Whatever happens I hope we have a striker lined up and aren't just hoping on something that doesn't materialise. Jutkiewiscz is decent cover for Lambert and no doubt could partner him as well but just IMO it's a bit of a meh signing, Rodriguez? Despite the hype he just doesn't look that good compared to Sharp and Maynard who are now much cheaper. Sordell fits the bill in terms of potential but would be very expensive and I doubt we'd have much of a chance now anyway. As for a foreign signing? Massive gamble (as of course all signings are) but do we have the time for them to settle in before making an impact? Naturally I'll wait and see before passing judgement though and I'm sure NA and NC have it all under control.

Are we requiring players to get baptised before they sign for us now? I know Markus was big on the god squad stuff but that seems a bit excessive....
-
There was nothing left of the christmas turkey except feathers - I draw the line at that...

Funny you should say that but yes, I also subscribe to the A 2 B cheap car mentality as well. Nothing wrong with that is there?
-
Oh right, thanks! I don't really wear jewellery but that makes sense now.
-
Well I got half way through that clip. Insipid, overly sentimental, boring and pretty rubbish if you ask me,
-
I'm probably missing something but all watches tell the time, right? And some look slightly smarter than others bit I really can't see the justification for spending more than fifty quid on one.
-
That would be Gary Lineker, Kevin Phillips, Micky Quinn, Dean Windass and a whole host of others for you. They don't really create chances because it's not their job, and they don't have any real pace either. Of course I'm not putting Sharp in the same category as those I've mentioned but he's a similar style of player and for my money it's not creating chances that's a problem but converting them. In any case if the rumour that we're looking at a wide right player is true then that is hopefully where the pace and opportunities come from - Matt Phillips or McGuggan can do that job easily. Personally I also think an orhodox striker helps Lambert as well.

Kings Speech - Glad I waited till it came on TV. Awful film and I was left with no emotional empathy with any of the characters.

Surely this would be a better question on the Newcastle forum and concerning Faustino Asprilla? If we'd won a title without MLT we would have had much, much better players who surely would have brought as good memories. redundant question really - we had MLT and no one is complaining.

TBF I have no inside info on why it fell down in the summer but there does seem to be extenuating circumstances. I agree though that the fact we were so open about the bid, and Adkins links to the player makes it an easy link this January but also believable as well. Personally I think it's a good move - Sharp will help our ball retention up front for a start. People can praise Guly as much as they like but I think an orthodox striker would be a bit cuter at keeping the ball and giving Lambert a bit more of a chance (and I'm not knocking Guly). Of course the other thing is that Sharp can score from half chances. We're still making chances but we need to put more away and from what I've seen Sharp could do that. Could he cut it in the prem? Who knows but I wouldn't rule it out.
-
Well I've been told the Sharp transfer is a done deal as well, source is tenous I guess - friend of someone who works at the training ground. They were also correct on Chappy being out for another four weeks. Could of course be wrong but thought I'd pass it on. FWIW I'd have preferred Maynard but I really think Sharp has something to offer as well and that it would be a good deal for us.

Just watched Black Swan and have to say what a seriously bad film that is. Honestly can't see what the hype was about - it's just a very, very bad film.

The first English speaking class at Fratton starts promisingly until Greg Halford gets distracted and spots his sister in an alluring shellsuit......
-
Pompey fans still think Matt Le Tiss was rubbish and we had exactly the same debate - he only scores pens, his shots are deflected etc, etc. Fact is RL is worth more to us than their squad combined twice over and if they can't see it then I don't really care.
-
Cheers, to be honest we're probably singing from the same hymn sheet here. I'd never slag the guy off because he has done well for us and not in his natural position either so fair play to him. As I mentioned you could say the same about Morgan as well. Both of them have put a shift in when the odds were against them so, in my case at least, it's no criticism when I think we need additions to the squad. Hopefully we look back in May and thank Guly for his part in a promotion campaign but if he were to carry on in that starting striker role I think we may regret it.
-
Notoriously difficult quoting stats because they really don't tell the whole story. Far more telling would be goals to shots ratio or even how many shots on target. Then of course you have to consider the respective teams they play in. Ultimately though it comes down to individual judgement and I'm by no means saying Guly is a bad player but I don't think he's a natural striker either. To be honest looking at the goalscorer list shows how good Sharp is - he's missed a fair number of games and plays for a team at the bottom of the table. So what you've shown is that there are affordable players out there that would do a better job. Ta.
-
Totally agree about "Into the darkest corner and if you liked that then you'll love "Before I go to sleep". I enjoyed 11.22.63. As you say, has echoes of previous books but in a good way. I certainly liked it far more than "Under the dome"
-
I think the thing we need to remember is that Guly isn't really a striker and neither is he right mid either - he does a job to a greater or lesser extent but he's filling in because we've needed him to do so. Probably his best position is at the tip of a diamond but we've got better players than him if we play that formation and I'm not really a fan of it either. His first touch just isn't good enough most of the time to play up front on a consistent basis and for a bloke his size he really should be better in the air than he is. What's amazing to me is that we're top goalscorers, top of the league and yet for much of that we've had a makeshift striker. My hope is that in January that if/when we get a proper striker in that it shows us a different dimension and far more clinical than we've been recently. I think Ricky in particular will benefit as well. To be fair you can also say the same of Morgan - he really shouldn't be playing right mid but he's doing a job and there's no one else (if NA doesn't rate SDR) that can do it. So there's a few positives there - Chappy coming back, a new striker and a conventional right winger/ right mid player sees us looking quite strong again. For striker I'd prefer Maynard because he has pace as well as goals but Sharp wouldn't be too bad either. Forest's McGugan is a good shout out wide but the good thing is that there are enough players out there that should be realistic targets for us that will improve us.
-
Or to be fair eye teeth either, though they do have extra digits......
-
Yeah, that's where I'm going but seeing as I won't get into town till 10 I think the best I can hope for is a very swift pint. More important is where are we all going after the game? I plan on several too many, bus home and bbc iplayer to watch the whole thing again. In the unlikely event we lose....... I don't even want to think about that.

I can't believe we haven't been linked with a left back yet. OK we've got Fox, Harding, Dickson and Luke Shaw coming through with Hooiveld and Seaborne possibly being able to cover but what happens if they form a little clique hire a minibus for a night out and get involved in an accident? That's all our potential left backs out - we need to sign a new anti-social one ASAP IMO.
