  1. Speak for yourself.
  2. Presumably you mean they have an ulterior motive. Never mind ...
  3. Would rate both of them a lot more if they got at least four or five goals per season.
  4. I already hate this "J-Rod" nomenclature. Rodriguez is fine. Or Jay Rodriguez.
  5. Typical right-wing "debating" style: begin with a made-up 'factoid' (what we used to call a lie); keep repeating the lie; and, in between the repetition of the lie, insult the opponent, instead of dealing with their valid arguments.
  6. It used to be that you had to be an honourable and sporting player in order to get selected for your country. Does that not hold any more?
  7. You're wrong. That notion originates with the mistaken labelling (probably intentional) of it a such in the U.S. back in the 20s and 30s. [Ever seen the film "Reefer Madness"?] One of the major propaganda "facts" used by the authorities is that marijuana is a "gateway" drug: i.e., that it leads people towards real hard drugs, like heroin. That 'mistake' (lie) has been used to justify decades of foolish social policy and very harsh legal punishments. The war on pot has been an utter failure - primarily because it is based on ignorance and lies.
  8. What's your favourite book of his? And which of those three writers do you like best?
  9. That's Mykonos.
  10. Rory Delap Paul Telfer Jermaine Wright
  11. It's not about nostalgia; it's about sound - high-fidelity sound.
  12. No, sharing the load includes shopping, cleaning, laundry, cooking, child-care, etc. It's even more essential when both parents are working.
  13. I was raised by Catholic parents, so we always had fish on Fridays. But we couldn't afford good pieces of fish, so it was usually fish fingers (passable) or fish cakes (horrible). We always had a roast beef dinner on Sunday, and the leftovers were used in a shepherd's pie on Monday. We always sat down together as a family. With my own family there is no set, regular routine, as far as the recipes go. But we have always sat down together at 6 p.m. every day for a family meal. Something we insisted on from the very first day of having kids (we have two teenagers now). We do not do meals in front of the TV. Ever.
  14. A Night to Remember is a much better film about the Titanic disaster.
  15. compromised?
  16. Zéro de conduite by Jean Vigo (1933) - about his boarding school experiences. A big influence on Truffaut's 400 Blows and Lindsay Anderson's If ....
  17. Scotland doesn't have the vote? Well ... no wonder they want to separate!
  18. Locked Down - the new album by Dr. John (Mac Rebennack), produced by Dan Auerbach. Great music, interesting arrangements, poor sound. I notice this on a lot of contemporary albums - the sound is squeezed and compressed, lacking high-fidelity frequency response. Sounds thin and murky.
  19. Ian Anderson wrote a song on this theme - it's on Tull's third album Benefit. Here's an excerpt from the lyrics: "I'm with you L.E.M. though it's a shame that it had to be you. The mother ship is just a blip from your trip made for two. I'm with you boys, so please employ just a little extra care. It's on my mind I'm left behind when I should have been there. Walking with you." The song is called "For Michael Collins, Jeffrey and Me."
  20. West Ham, Everton and Liverpool - because of rivialries with friends and relations.
  21. Le Tissier's wonder goal against Man U's Taibi.
  22. A friend of mine had a small wedding reception (about thirty people) at a local restaurant which featured their own regular house band - a black R&B/blues band. After the meal, the music was about to begin. I kid you not - my friend went over and made a request - for the first dance, he and his new wife grooved around the dance floor to the band's version of B.B. King's The Thrill is Gone.
  23. Sorry to hear that. One of my great heroes when I was a kid.
  24. Interesting read. Thanks!
  25. Great song; superb recording!
