Randy Newman: "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" Broken windows and empty hallways A pale dead moon in the sky streaked with gray Human kindness is overflowing And I think it's going to rain today Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles With frozen smiles to chase love away Human kindness is overflowing And I think it's going to rain today Lonely, lonely Tin can at my feet Think I'll kick it down the street That's the way to treat a friend Bright before me the signs implore me To help the needy and show them the way Human kindness is overflowing And I think it's going to rain today Ray Davies (The Kinks) - "Waterloo Sunset": Dirty old river, must you keep rolling Flowing into the night People so busy, makes me feel dizzy Taxi light shines so bright But I don't need no friends As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise Every day I look at the world from my window But chilly, chilly is evening time Waterloo sunset's fine Terry meets Julie, Waterloo Station Every Friday night But I am so lazy, don't want to wander I stay at home at night But I don't feel afraid As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise Every day I look at the world from my window But chilly, chilly is evening time Waterloo sunset's fine Millions of people swarming like flies 'round Waterloo underground But Terry and Julie cross over the river Where they feel safe and sound And they don't need no friends As long as they gaze on Waterloo sunset They are in paradise Waterloo sunset's fine John Lennon - "Strawberry Fields Forever": Let me take you down Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields Nothing is real And nothing to get hung about Strawberry Fields forever Living is easy with eyes closed Misunderstanding all you see It's getting hard to be someone But it all works out It doesn't matter much to me Let me take you down Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields Nothing is real And nothing to get hung about Strawberry Fields forever No one I think is in my tree I mean it must be high or low That is you can't, you know, tune in But it's all right That is I think it's not too bad Let me take you down Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields Nothing is real And nothing to get hung about Strawberry Fields forever Always, no sometimes, think it's me But you know I know when it's a dream I think I know I mean a yes But it's all wrong That is I think I disagree Let me take you down Cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields Nothing is real And nothing to get hung about Strawberry Fields forever Strawberry Fields forever Strawberry Fields forever

Who's annoyed? I stand by my original opinion (#83). The other post was witty repartee, but you didn't seem to realise that. Maybe it's you who should lighten up a bit?

Yeah, it's a stinker! Amazing really, when you see who was involved: directed by Mike Nichols, scriptwriters were Joseph Heller and Buck Henry.

Is there anything worse than answering a rhetorical question?

As my mother would say, "Don't be daft!" That's just a ridiculous comment.

Is there anything worse than a poster starting a thread with an opinion that they don't believe in - just to be on a wind-up? And then they come on later asking not to be patronised by someone who takes their opinion to be sincere. Jeez. As my mother would put it: "Say what you mean and mean what you say."

Denim jeans, I think, were worn originally mostly by cowboys. And then "blue-collar workers" favoured them, because of their comfort and durability. It was only much later - 50s and 60s that they became popular with young people.

Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down by Ry Cooder. An excellent album from one of the greats.

Sad news. She was a dynamic performer. I saw her once in the early 80s at a blues club in Toronto - the Brunswick House on Bloor Street West. A great voice!

Have to strongly disagree. Great film (and highly under-rated). How could it miss with this cast: Julie Christie (yum!), Peter Finch, Alan Bates, and Terence Stamp. Beautifully filmed on the Dorset Coast (I visited several of the shooting locations near Durdle Door and Chesil Beach in 2009). Perhaps it's the Thomas Hardy-factor that turns you off. His plots can be quite depressing - emphasising the cruel hand of fate, etc., etc. But this is one of the films/Tv productions based on his books that I really liked!

Another sub-topic: Are there certain individuals, or certain scenes in comedy or drama that you always come back to when you want to mimic a particular accent? For a Yorkshire accent, I always think of Monty Python: 1) "One o't flayrods gone out askew on treadle", or 2) "We 'ad to lick rord clean wit' tung". For a scouse accent, I try to channel one of The Beatles. For a cockney, I'll mimic Harry H. Corbett: "You dirty ol' man!" Others?
