One option is obviously to keep them happy during the probation period and then return to your current hours once past probation as they would lose, one assumes, any unfair dismissal case if they then sacked you for not working the expected hours given you are working more than what is contractually agreed. He was not the great designer but, to his credit, he did KNOW a good design when he saw one. The design for the iMac had been kicking round apple for years before he got back in charge. If he did have a touch of genius it was that he could spot a good design and drive people to improve it but by himself, from scratch, his designs have not been great, e.g. the NeXT computer which was a complete commercial failure. Possibly his greatest gift to the world was that he did spot the advantages of the GUI and ripped it off from Xerox when the engineers there that developed it just thought it was cool.

Its sad he as died but personally I don't buy the genius line. He was very driven, very persuasive and very smart, especially when it came to deals that benefited himself, but he made a hatful for bad decisions in his businesses and was incredibly lucky. For example he only bought pixar for their long forgotten hardware that was a commercial failure, only visited the animation people about once a year and even tried several times to sell them off before Toy Story came out and Toy Story itself came very close to never being made. He also come across a not being a very nice person at times. It always seams odd to me that he is somehow considered a hero against Bill Gates villain when it appears jobs was much more of a mercenary and how little good he has done with his fortune compared to Gates.
