All I'm saying is, yes, Wanyama brings something, but does that take away something else? It's about balance. Do you make Wanyama, for example, pass it better, or do you make Cork, for example, sit deeper. There are 2 sides to the story.
I'm inclined to think that the defensive record at the start of the season was due to a number of things and will be hard to repeat. People say it was wanyama, it was lovren, it was confidence, it was whatever. It's not just about personnel, it's about momentum and spirit; that desire to make 2 clean sheets become 3, and so on.
I agree, mostly.
Lovren, at his best, is coolness personified, but under pressure, he has shown that he can lose it. I think he's brilliant, but I've noticed this a couple of times now. He'll dive in when he doesn't need to. He got hurt seeking retribution in the sunderland game and it nearly happened again yesterday (I think he ended up getting caught by a teammate). Concentration needs to be maintained for 90+ minutes.
We are one CB away from having one of the best back fours in the premier league imo. However, we are short up front.
So, we need a CB and a striker to improve the first team, plus a few others to provide strength to the squad. I think our midfield is ok, providing no-one leaves.
Is our formation working for us? Should we be trying others?
Are we capable of changing it, with the players we have? For instance, Liverpool played a diamond 4 in midfield yesterday. Could we do that? Morgan at base, lallana left, cork/Davis right, gaston top. Jrod and lambert up front.
the truth is, there are two types of team in this division. we need to find a way, or a team, to play both kinds. at the moment, we can only play the football kind.
