  1. Basically any U21 that wasn't selected for the pre-season tour hasn't got a squad number. Last year a few U21s were allocated numbers when the Europa League list had to be submitted 29 Mugabi 30 Wood 31 Little 34 Flannigan 35 Debayo 37 Willard 45 Seager 46 Gape 47 Barnes That could happen again - apart from Debayo they could all keep the same number.
  2. Redslo Excellent analysis as ever. I’d done a similar analysis in the Europa League thread a few weeks ago and generally came to similar conclusions about categories of players. I also included the scholars though I agree with you that doing so was probably going a bit too far and that just looking at the professionals is more sensible (last season all those that qualified for inclusion who were professionals were given Europa League squad numbers but none of the non-pro scholars). Strictly if you are listing all professionals then Thomas O'Connor, Christoph Klarer and Aaron O'Driscoll should also be included in your list – though that would be academic as none have been at the club long enough to make the B list! In my analysis I came up with some differences though I think two are probably just omissions from your list, namely Maya Yoshida is missing from your ‘Other’ list and Olufela Olomola is missing from your ‘B’ list – he signed pro recently and joined the club in summer 2014 so qualifies for the B list. The two players where I came to a different conclusion were Harry Lewis and Richard Bakary. I don’t think Lewis qualifies as a B list player as he has not been at the club for 2 full seasons (joined from Shrewsbury at start of last season) - so he would need to be an A list player or excluded from the Europa League squad. Like Hojbjerg he qualifies as an U21 for the Premier League. You have listed Richard Bakary as an A list player but I don’t see why he doesn’t qualify as a B list player. As far as I know nationality is not relevant to inclusion on the list, he is under 21 and he has been registered with the club since April 2014 i.e. more than 2 years.
  3. I think Gallagher's omission is simply an error as he's not listed in the Development Squad either. He was shown there before he went out on loan but never reinstated after he returned (last autumn I think)
  4. I believe he would be on the unusual position as qualifying as an U21 for the Premier League but not for the Europa League. The former just has a date of birth qualifying criterion whereas the latter also says that you must have been eligible to play for the club for 2 years. So to play in the Europa League he would need to be included in our main A list. Goalkeeper Harry Lewis (signed last season from Shrewsbury) is on the same situation.
  5. Thanks! Was writing post 65 when yours came in.
  6. Jake Flannigan today signed a one year contract extension (club Twitter page). I've updated the OP The OS profiles (first team, development and U18s) have all been updated - presumably earlier today to coincide with 1 July which is generally the date old contracts expire and new ones take effect. I don't know whether it it significant but Lloyd Isgrove and Sam Gallagher have not been added back in (mind you the latter has not been listed for months so it's probably just an error). There are a few other oddities as well like Dom Gape listed in both the first team and development and a few over 21s shown in the development squad (notably Stephens, Turnbull, Gape). Stekelenburg has finally been removed.
  7. Already done - always quick to update the good news stories!
  8. Great news. It's only a year extension and we all know how contracts count for nothing at times but this sends an important message just when it's needed (announcement perhaps brought forward as timing during Euro 2016 is odd?). He's been a very important player for us since his arrival - and I'm sure that extends beyond his contribution on the pitch (which alone has been consistently impressive). You can see how influential he has been for Northern Ireland as well. A long term deal for Shane Long would be my next request, Les. Then Sadio.
  9. Saints’ Europa League/Premier League squad 2016-17 With the release of the released/retained lists, I’ve updated the information spread over 2 or 3 other posts to bring together details on when contracts expire, 25-man Premier and European squad rules. I’ll keep updated regularly but particularly when there are any departures or arrivals or errors are identified. Note this is not a detailed analysis of what we need to do to comply with the rules just a reference list. There is an excellent blog containing that analysis produced by RedSLO: http://redsloscf.blogspot.co.uk/ http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/ First, the rules on 25-man squad lists – which differ between the Premier League and Europe. PREMIER LEAGUE Clubs must name a 25-man squad of players who do not qualify as Under 21, at least 8 of whom must be home grown players who have been registered with any club affiliated with the FA or Welsh FA for three entire seasons or 36 months before turning 21 (or leave empty spots), plus unlimited players who qualify as Under 21s. There is no requirement to split between Association trained and club trained as there is in Europe (see below). For 2016-17 an Under 21 player is someone born on or after 1 January 1995. EUROPE The Europa League regulations for 2016-17 are here: http://www.uefa.org/MultimediaFiles/Download/Regulations/uefaorg/Regulations/02/35/92/45/2359245_DOWNLOAD.pdf In summary, clubs must submit an “A” list squad immediately prior to deadlines set for each stages, which for the group stages is 1 September 2016. For all matches from the round of 32, a maximum of three new eligible players can be added to the “A” list for the remaining matches in the competition as long as the qualifying conditions are still respected (e.g. if there are already 25 on the list, a player must be omitted). They must be registered by a deadline of 1 February 2017. The “A” list squad comprises players who don’t qualify for the “B” list squad. o Up to 25 players can be on the list at any time o At least 2 of the 25 must be goalkeepers o At least 8 of the 25 must be “locally trained” - at least 4 of the 8 must be “club-trained” and a maximum of 4 of the 8 “association-trained.” o There are limitations on registering players who have already played for another club in the same competition during the same season. If a club does not have enough club-trained or association-trained players, it must leave the equivalent number of spots empty in the 25-man squad. “Club-trained” players are ones who have been registered with the club for three full seasons between ages 15 and 21. The seasons can include the ones where the player turns 15 or 21. “Association-trained” players are ones who have been registered with one or more clubs from the same association for three seasons or 36 months between the ages of 15 and 21. All club-trained players are also association-trained players for the nation in which the club is registered. Clubs can register an unlimited number of players on the “B” list. Players must be born on or after 1 January 1995 and, by the time of registration on the B list, have been eligible to play for the club for any uninterrupted period of 2 years since their 15th birthday. If they are 16, the player needs to have been registered with the club for the previous two years without interruption. Second, details of the squads as they currently stand in light of these rules. Saints' Confirmed Premier League 25-man squad 2016-17 - until January 2017 By 1 September deadline we named the following 23 players in our Premier League 25-man squad https://www.premierleague.com/news/84136 1. Fraser Forster (Home Grown (HG)) 2. Cédric Soares 3. Maya Yoshida 4. Jordy Clasie 5. Florin Gardoș 6. José Fonte 7. Shane Long (HG) 8. Steven Davis (HG) 9. Jay Rodriguez (HG) 10. Charlie Austin (HG) 11. Dušan Tadić 13. Alex McCarthy (HG) 14. Oriol Romeu 15. Cuco Martina 16. James Ward-Prowse (HG) 17. Virgil van Dijk 19. Sofiane Boufal 21. Ryan Bertrand (HG) 22. Nathan Redmond (HG) 24. Jack Stephens (HG) 26. Jérémy Pied 27. Lloyd Isgrove (HG) 28. Stuart Taylor (HG) Saints' Europa League “A” list 2016-17 We have named the players listed below for the Europa League A list. http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=2017/clubs/club=52923/squad/index.html#ui-tabs-tab_TeamsSquad We had to add two players to our Premier League squad who qualify as U21s in the Premier League but have not been at the club long enough (2 years) to qualify as U21 in the Europa League - namely Harry Lewis and Pierre Højbjerg. We had to leave a space vacant because we have only three club trained players, meaning we could only name a 24 man squad. We omitted Pied given his long term injury and over 21s who are out on loan. So our 24 man squad is: 1. Fraser Forster (Home Grown (HG) Association 1) 2. Cédric Soares 3. Maya Yoshida 4. Jordy Clasie 5. Florin Gardoș 6. José Fonte 7. Shane Long (HG Association 2) 8. Steven Davis (HG Association 3) 9. Jay Rodriguez (HG Association 4) 10. Charlie Austin (HG Association 5) 11. Dušan Tadić 13. Alex McCarthy (HG Association 6) 14. Oriol Romeu 15. Cuco Martina 16. James Ward-Prowse (HG club 1) 17. Virgil van Dijk 19. Sofiane Boufal 21. Ryan Bertrand (HG Association 7) 22. Nathan Redmond (HG Association 8 ) 23. Pierre Højbjerg 24. Jack Stephens (HG club 2) 27. Lloyd Isgrove (HG club 3) 28. Stuart Taylor (HG Association 9) 41. Harry Lewis (HG Association 10) Omitted 26. Jérémy Pied - long term injury Paulo Gazzaniga - season long loan in Spain Confirmed Premier League U21 players and players included on European B list 2016-17 Under 21s 18. Harrison Reed 30. Will Wood 31. Armani Little 32. Olufela Olomola 33. Matt Targett 34. Jake Flannigan 35. Alfie Jones 37. Harley Willard 38. Sam McQueen 39. Josh Sims 42. Jake Hesketh 44. Marcus Barnes 45. Ryan Seager 47. Richard Bakary 48. Ollie Cook Scholars 50. Ben Rowthorn 51. Tyreke Johnson* 52. Dan N'Lundulu 54. Siph Mdlalose 55. Callum Slattery* 60. Ben Cull [uEFA site shows him as a goalkeeper and with squad number of 60, though that number has been allocated to Will Smallbone domestically] 61. Connor Langan [uEFA site shows him with squad number of 61, though that number has been allocated to Michael Obafemi domestically] Included on Premier League U21 list but excluded from European B list Eligible for Europa B list but omitted Jason McCarthy - season long loan at Walsall 40. Sam Gallagher - season long loan at Blackburn Rovers Scholars 56. Adam Parkes 57. Jake Vokins 60. Will Smallbone Neal Osborn Alex Cull Javen Siu Oliver Gardner Harry Hamblin Ineligible for B list (not at club 2 years) 23. Pierre Højbjerg - signed July 2016 - hence he is included on Europa League A list 41. Harry Lewis - signed summer 2015 - hence he is included on Europa League A list Scholars 43. Yan Valery* - signed July 2015 49. Thomas O'Connor*- signed July 2015 53. Archie Thomas - signed July 2015 58. Aaron O'Driscoll* - signed July 2016 59. Jonathan Afolabi - signed July 2016 [in fact he is omitted from the club's list of Premier League U21 players as well for some reason] 61. Michael Obafemi - signed April 2016 Kieran Freeman - signed July 2016 Christoph Klarer* - signed July 2016 Rugare Musendo - signed 2015 Jamie Bradley-Green - signed 2015-16 Harrison Davis - signed July 2015 Harlem Hale - signed as U15 * scholar but has signed professional contract Next season Gallagher, Targett, Reed, Hojbjerg and McQueen who are U21s this year will no longer qualify as U21s. Gazzaniga will also return to add to the number of main squad players. Of the over 21s, only Martina, Isgrove a and Taylor (plus Jason McCarthy who will qualify as over 21 next season) will be out of contract and may therefore leave. So overall it does look like there is little scope to bring in new players without selling players whose contracts extend beyond the end of this season (though generally this has not been an issue!).
  10. http://m.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/article.100616-premier-league-clubs-submit-retained-and-released-lists.html Released and retained lists published in full for each Premier League club. Most of this we knew but there were six players whose contracts were ending in 2016 where the position was not, up to now, clear. Debayo and Flannigan have been offered new contracts. Scholars Lea, Hallett, Clinton and Kayembe are not on the list indicating they have been released (there is no requirement to include released scholars in the released list). I have updated the opening post. In the absence of any info I have assumed for now that Debayo and Flannigan have been offered a one year extension.
  11. I've updated the OP with Will Britt's departure. Looks like Debayo and Flannigan's contracts may not be ending in 2016 after all - they signed extensions in the Cortese days when length of contracts for the U21s was not usually specified so 2016 was an estimate. Today's announcement is a more limited list of departures than expected because, unlike previous years, it does not mention the scholars who are finishing their two year scholarships. We may need to wait until the Premier League announces the full retained list in June before confirmation of what's happening there, or there may be a separate low key announcement about the scholars. Understandably, I suspect the club is trying to play down the number of departures to avoid unhelpful headlines. Hopefully at some point the OS profiles for the first team, U21 and U18s will be updated - despite the dramatic improvements in the media side of the club over the last few years the profiles are not usually very up to date or particularly informative. As well as missing players (e.g. Sam Gallagher), the descriptions are rarely updated.
  12. Updated with Marcus Barnes' contract extension. I have also removed Gaston Ramírez and moved Jordan Turnbull and Dom Gape out of the U21 list as they do not qualify as U21s next season
  13. OP updated. The OS article does not say how long the contracts are. I've assumed they run until the end of the 2018 season.
  14. In 2014 we announced the retained list on 17 May and last year we announced it on 26 May (the Premier League announced a consolidated list of all clubs in June). So I would expect something within the next week or two. I've updated the opening post with Thomas O'Connor's contract. A two and a half year deal is odd - surely that means his contract ends mid-season? I've assumed that the half relates to the rest of this season - and it's then 2 years from the start of the new season i.e. contract ends at end of the 2017-18 season. But it's not very clear.
  15. I found a cached version and added that into post 1 as well.
  16. 2nd year scholar Stuart Wilkin has confirmed on Twitter that he has left the club. Updated with this, confirmation of end of Kelvin Davis' playing career with Saints and the three contract extensions
  17. Query for Redslo which he may be able to answer from his excellent research. In your blog you say that: "A player is eligible to be place on Southampton’s “B” list if they were born on or after 1 January 1995 and were eligible to play for Southampton for any two uninterrupted years since their 15th birthday. If they are 16, then need to have been registered with Southampton for the last two years." I assume that the Under 21s we have sent out on loan this season would all be eligible for a European B list in 16/17 on the basis that each (Seager, Gallagher, McCarthy, McQueen) had been eligible to play for us for 2 uninterrupted years before they went on loan? Will Britt, on the other hand, who joined us in 2012 but seems to have been shipped out on loan to various clubs since then (Norwich, Maidenhead, Bognor Regis, Norwich again) and does not appear to have been with us for a 2 year uninterrupted period. I don't think he is eligible for the B list next year - and I think this explains why he was omitted from this year's list (I had assumed it was because he was injured). I think Harry Lewis would also be ineligible for a 2016/17 B list having only joined us at the start of this season. Tyreke Johnson joined us in early August 2014 so wouldn't be eligible for a B list until early August 2016. With Harry Isted having left and Davis and Stekelenburg probably not around next year, the goalkeeping position is an obvious area for strengthening as your blog highlights. Of course we could include Britt and/or Lewis on the A list.
  18. And Harry Isted is still in the U21 profiles despite moving to Stoke early in the January window.
  19. He was on the bench for the U18s last week so it's sudden if he has. Despite being a 2nd year scholar, he's never been listed in the OS U18 profiles* so we can't read anything into his absence from that. The club clearly wanting to keep his arrival and (possible) departure a secret. * The OS profiles generally are pretty unreliable. Sam Gallagher's currently missing from both the U21 and first team squad, for example. Since he's no longer on loan he ought to be shown in one of them.
  20. For next season (16/17) we only need to 'promote' an U21 player to the 25 man squad if they are born before 1 January 1995. I believe Jordan Turbull, Dom Gape and JWP are the only current U21s that fall into this category.
  21. http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/news/2015-16/feb/020216-2015-2016-premier-league-squads-announced.html Updated 25 man and youth squads announced. Main changes since August: 25 man squad In: Charlie Austin Out: Steven Caulker and Gaston Ramirez Under 21 (contract and scholars) In: Thomas O'Connor and Yann Valery Out: Oskar Cvjeticanin, Harry Isted and Joshua Murray
  22. Steve Moran - very first touch of the ball having come on as a sub (first goal with first touch in League football presumably since we were his first club).
  23. Posts 10 and 12 of the linked thread updated to reflect Charlie Austin's addition, Josh Sims' December contract extension, Caulker's departure and return from loan of Stephens and Gallagher. Hope it is now up to date. It's difficult to get confirmed position of all the U21s (under Cortese we often seemed reluctant to divulge length of contract for young players) but I think the dates for the first team are certainly accurate.
  24. Updated to reflect Charlie Austin's addition, Josh Sims's December contract extension, Caulker's departure and return from loan of Stephens and Gallagher.
  25. With the subs that came on: McCarthy (for Mugabi) Gape (for Clasie) McQueen (for Gaston) Sims (for Juanmi) Hesketh (for Seager)
