RONALD KOEMAN will target Virgil van Dijk as one of his first signings as Southampton boss. SunSport revealed in April that Saints scouts ran the rule over the £8m-rated Celtic stopper against Motherwell. Koeman is expected to be unveiled at St Mary’s this week and is poised to sanction a bid for his fellow Dutchman. The Holland legend is a long-term admirer of van Dijk, having followed him since his Groningen days. And just last month, Koeman urged Dutch boss Louis van Gaal to hand him a World Cup place. Speaking on a TV debate ahead of Brazil, he said: “I still see a role for Virgil van Dijk in this system.” Koeman is close to agreeing terms with Saints and will need defensive reinforcements after stopper Dejan Lovren — a target for Liverpool — handed in a transfer request. Van Dijk, 22, is viewed as an ideal replacement for the Croat after a stunning debut season at Celtic following his £2million move to Glasgow. Several English clubs have been tracking the Dutch ace but Saints have already done their homework as SunSport told you on April 21. Now the Koeman factor could make a move to England’s south coast even more appealing to van Dijk, who Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell last week urged to stay at Parkhead for at least one more season.
