18 months ago we played at Villa. We had just beaten Norwich and were comfortably in the top half of the PL. Everything in the garden seemed rosey. We lost 4 nil , were lucky to get away with that scoreline and everything then turned to shit in the next season and a half. Today has a similar feel. So optimistic beforehand we were shit and lucky to get away with a 5 nil defeat. I just hope that history doesn't repeat itself.

Returned last night from a week in Slovenia. OK it is not Croatia but it is very close. Would recommend it for many of the reasons people have indicated about Croatia. Beautiful scenery, friendly helpful people, cheap beer (hard pressed to pay more than £2.50 a pint), decent craft breweries etc etc. Ljubljana is a good place and must make a great venue if you fancy a weekend city break.

Do you know what happenings when players sign new contracts? Eg JWP must have received a large signing on fee when he agreed to his 7 year contract. Is the cost of the signing on fee swallowed in the year of signing or is it amortised in the same way as transfer fees?

I am pleased that it is not just me who doubts the maths here. There will be costs to write off against the income from player sales depending on how the initial purchase cost was amortised in the finances. Cash in could well be £150 million but this will not all be profit.

Not surprised that money is an issue when looking at all the deadwood in the squad. Lyanco going will help but Tall Paul,Perraud, ABK, Moussa and Sully all need to be sorted as well.
