Getting back to the subject of this thread.... Has anyone else noticed how public services are falling apart? My father in law has just died and it has taken 12 days to get an appointment with a registrar. By law deaths need to be registered within 5 days!!! 6 years ago I had 2 registrar appointments within 3 days (cock up with the death certificate meant a second visit) when my mother in law died.

The government say that 1% increase for nurses would cost £700m. That however is for the whole NHS work force. Nurses constitute just less than half of the NHS work force. Say £350m for each 1% that nurses are awarded. 19% for nurses would equate to c. £6.5 // £7 billion. However anyone who thinks that nurses will only settle for 19% clearly knows nothing about negotiation / swallows government nonsense without thinking. An 8% increase for nurses (which is what the Scottish nurses seem to be accepting ) would cost just under £3 billion. As the government have offered (and presumably budgeted for) a 4.75% increase the extra burden on the Exchequer would be in the order of £1.2 / £1.5 billion.. Not exactly chickenfeed but a fraction of the amount that Boris could spaff up the wall in a morning.

Has nobody in government heard the word "negotiate"? Nurses ask for 19% . You offer 4%. They reduce their demands. You increase your offer and you meet somewhere in the middle. In Scotland there are no strikes and it looks as if 8% is going to be accepted. The government is certainly playing an odd game at the moment. Presumably they see political mileage in taking a hard stance. I am not so sure.

I don't believe it. The week before Christmas is when people are trying to arrange get togethers with friends and family.The club are not helping. BBC originally showed this match as being played on Tuesday so I arranged a Wednesday "Christmas curry". When the match was announced on the Wednesday I managed to get my mates to move our get together to the Tuesday. Now we are back to a match on the Tuesday. It's a shambles!!

Very true but I think you have a selective memory. Have you forgotten that dreadful period from 2005 to 2009? There were some dire times then. 2010 -2012 may have been great seasons but 2008 -9 in particular was fucking awful. If we were to be relegated this year there is no guarantee that it would be like 2010 -2012

Has there ever been a worse TV commentator than Matterface? He spent all the match with Partridgesque cliches on the wonderfulness of Brazil. Eg No team has scored against them in the World Cup since 2018 ( they had only played 2 games in the World Cup since 2018). Apparently the semi final between them and Argentina is going to be a fantastic game ( why bother with the last 16 and quarter finals) . You are right that the football has been mostly crap but you cannot beat this World Cup for drama and unpredictability. The Saudis beating Argentina. The Japanese comeback against Germany. Morocco now on track to beat the Belgians - who in turn were very lucky to beat Canada. The bookies must be loving these results.... And I am enjoying watching them.
