My old Grandad went to his first game in 1946 and was obsessed with Charlie Wayman. They even named their cat after him. ‘Up the middle for Charlie’ was still his favourite phrase when watching us some 70 years later. I remember as a kid pre internet I was certain he’d just made him up. Dementia robbed him of his love of Saints last year, and he sadly passed away in January at 87. It was obvious that Downes and Charles wouldn’t work when they played together at Bristol City. Need to break this pairing up.

I thought he played pretty well at Watford and surprised at the stick he’s getting after today. We were basically playing with 10 men thanks to Downes, I’d be aiming the criticism his way personally.

We need something, anything, to kick start the season. All seems a bit pointless and mid-table at the moment, which is not a good place to be.

You can’t possibly say that. We can’t be much worse in January then we were today, and that’s their max. I’d still bet good money that we’ll comfortably finish well above them.
