I have been saying this for some time. I think our ambition is to stay a PL club with the minimum outlay. In other words spending a little and finishing 17th is better business than spending a lot and finishing 6th. BTW, the Europa league costs the club more than it makes, so why bother.

Mid table is the ideal. No worries about Europe or relegation. Consistently in the top league and with the opportunity to give one of the big boys a bloody nose now and again. Sounds great !

In the end, like most middling football clubs, we ran out of luck. This was combined with a series of poor managerial appointments and a bloated squad of average players. We almost had to go down to get rid of all the deadwood before we could rebuild. In the end Markus came along and rescued us, but we were very very lucky.

Whatever people say there is no doubt, as has been obvious since September, that we need strengthening in a few key positions. If we don't then I would suggest that the lack of investment by the current board means a sale on the way. A real gamble IMO.
