I might be going soft in my old age, but I don’t particularly blame Baz for either goal yesterday. I’m surprised people are, as performances go that was one of Baz’s better efforts (admittedly, a very low bar). Id have liked him to have come and claimed the initial cross for the second, but I’m not sure too many keepers would have nowadays. Maybe he should have been braver once it was knocked in, and instead of diving sideways could have cleaned ball, man and Wood out. That’s probably being over picky, but it would be nice for him to make an unexpected save once in a while….

First half was ok, clearly should have been one up. AA needs to be fucked off the penalties. Leo or Manning take most of the free kicks, so they’re the better dead ball bods. One of them should take it. Second half, Will Still football still. Leo was poor, Azaz disappeared, too slow, just didn’t move the ball quick enough. Substitutions a bit of a mess, and the defending poor. The final 10 mins were disgraceful really, no urgency, no passion and no determination to not get beat. Passive, just going through the motions. Goals were poor. First one could have been cleared twice before the cross finally came in. Second one, Wood to blame, although I would like to see how long the first cross was in the air, and how far out the guy won the header from. Id prefer my keeper to come and punch that, but as Baz doesn’t do that when it’s 5 years out, there’s no way he’s doing that at 10 yards out. I reckon a keeper in the 1970’s comes and gets that, but these modern sweeper keepers only come that far to mince about, and pass it to defenders. But, Wood must take the vast majority of the blame for that one, fucking woeful. This lot are ok when it’s open and the opposition play into our hands, but fuck me, they shrink when the tackles start flying and they have to get in amongst the muck and bullets. Fratton ain’t going to be pretty viewing, unless Tonda knocks that out of them.

Had Baz let it in, they would have scored 2, making the final result 2-2 (as opposed to 2-1) You claimed Baz’s save got us 3 points, but because we scored 2 goals we would have got 1 anyway Therefore the most Baz’s save could have given us was 2 extra points. Unless of course Baz’s save was so miraculous the EPL gave us an extra bonus point.

The second goal was completely down to him, he rose like an anorexic Warwick Davies, I’ve seen 16 year olds with more physical presence in the 6 yard box. AM would have come & punched that away, no fucking bother. If you don’t think a keeper should be doing better with that, you’re off your friggin head. The thing is, it wouldn’t be so bad if that was all he was bad at, if he was a good shot stopper, who struggled to manage the 6 yard box from corners. But it’s not, he’s shit at pretty much every aspect of goalkeeping except passing it. That’s about as useful as a cricketer who can’t bowl, can’t bat, can’t catch, but can throw the ball back to the wicket keeper well.

To be fair to Lego head, this was probably one area he was excellent in. Keeping the ball, sucking the life out of the game and seeing out the victory. It’s a difficult league we it’s games coming up quickly, handling it is something he has to learn quickly. He seems to understand the need to protect players & ease through when games are won, but the implementation isn’t quite there. Had he left Leo on & he’d got injured in the 85th minute , he’d be getting pelters. This is the first time Leo will have played a season like this, so it’s understandable we need to protect him a bit. Everytime he comes off they’ll be a drop off, same with Fellowes. Whilst I understand the rationale, the execution isn’t quite right imo. For me we’re still set up to be open and outplay sides, but with the mentality of seeing out the game, we’ve just swapped top players for slightly worse ones. Add to that the mentality of “hold what we have” and we’re caught between 2 stools. Personally, I’d rather he adapted tactically to see the game out rather than just swap inferior players in. . As the half went on, id rather he had Jack or Edwards on the right instead of bringing in Frazier, sat Jander in front of them . Leaving OR & Downes centrally. You could even have done the same the other side with Wellington or Manning in front of other. There’s no way WBA were scoring 3 if we set up to see it through & had that mindset. im sure there will be lessons learnt. Had we needed 5, we’d have come out with that mindset and got them. Nothing I’ve seen indicates this guy won’t adapt and work out how to see games out his way with minimum fuss.
