Disagree. They still have to show the talent to get the upgrade or no one will want them. If he ends up at Man U then good for him. If no big club is interested then he might end up knocking around on loan at some middling European club, which isn’t what he wants. Had we actually been anything other than ****e for the last two years he might be asking to stay. I prefer this sort of arrangement to a Van **** situation where we give a great big new contract and the player still acts like a **** straight away. It’s better for everyone if expectations are clear.

Yes, whatever you think of benefits as a concept, Universal Credit is administered in a way which is relatively arbitrary and illogical, which leads to hardship that wouldn’t occur if the rules made more sense. And transition from old benefits to Universal Credit has also been arbitrary and illogical. If you’re going to have a benefit safety net then it needs to be logical and effective otherwise you’re just ****ing money away to no end.

How does that “force his hand”? He’s either prepared to lose money to play football sooner or he isn’t. It’s up to him. And if we flog McCarthy he’ll be second choice again.

As it stands we have a commitment to pay him around 6 or 7 million over the next two years. If he leaves he’ll probably get about 500k to 1m a year max from a Championship club. If we wanted to “pay him off” we’d probably need to bung at least 5m upfront. Maybe he’d lose sponsorship too so that would have to be factored in. The fact is, he’s paid so much more than his ability merits that he’s really in the driving seat here.
