I used to play at Trojans with a friend who was a member and I agree the courts there are very good. I didn't join as I was already a member of Fleming Park, but I THINK it would have been about £100 to join and then the courts were something like £1/10 mins. It depends when you play but courts were always free at lunch times. And, if you're good enough or you have an ego the size of a house, you can play in one of the courts with glass back walls whilst spectators watch from the seating area behind you.

I saw that film at a 'specialist' cinema once - very disappointing - no plot to speak of. Anyway, I feel a bit stupid actually. I just hadn't realised that this was a metal-only set of playlists. I'll tune to another station...

Just for the record I want to be clear about David Icke and the lizards. I never suggested that David Icke was wrong when he says that world is controlled by a shadowy illuminati elite that happen to be 12 feet tall, blood-drinking, child-molesting lizards. I was suggesting that the purple tracksuits were evidence of his breakdown. As for the lizards, well let's just say that I that I've never seen David Cameron and a 12 feet tall lizard in the same room at SAME time.

Not my cup of tea at all I'm afraid - but I'm sure you'd probably hate an acoustic folk compilation too. I found the music impenetrable - a wall of sound - in a bad way. That said I actually could appreciate the structure of No Quarter, Archetype and Albatross.

Fascinating interview. He's in the middle of breakdown I fear. Reminds me of David Icke's public breakdown but without the purple track suits.

Great initiative. But rather than model your protest on the Red Army Faction, why not take your lead from the IRA's Bobby Sands' hunger strike? In addition to forgoing food you would also have to smear the walls of your padded cell with your own excrement. But if it's a cause worth fighting for - it's worth shyteing for. Surely? On the plus side, the more successful the hunger strike - the less you'll have to smear on the walls. Free the Saints' Web Two!

Saw True Grit over the weekend. The original was my late father's favourite film and I was forced to watch it many times growing up. I enjoyed the slightly sentimental story and the incongruous relationship that forms between the hired gun anti-hero and the young girl. I was concerned about the wisdom of remaking such an iconic, if perhaps not actually technically brilliant film. I shouldn't have worried. It was really excellent. Stunning performances from Jeff Bridges and the 14 year old who plays the central role of the daughter of the murdered man. In fact the performances of the all minor characters were superb, stunning dialogue, stunning use of period 'English' and wonderfully deep characters. A very different film from the original but interestingly the scene where Rooster Cogburn rides alone against the 4 bad guys was almost identical to the original. Go see it.

I guess you were aiming for irony by posting that on a thread about the trolling that followed the suicide of a 15 year old school girl. I also guess you were looking for a response - so well done. No, really. Well done. If only there were some way to pass your thoughts directly to her grieving parents. I'm sure it would bring them some comfort at what must be a difficult time.

Very funny. I got it to say the following to get around the swear filter. Only to find that there isn't a swear filter! http://gobarbra.com/hit/new-ed1adb43c2bd4f1ffcdb2c55269677d3 Made me smile.

I waited until Barca scored and put £5 on Arsenal at 13 (12/1) on Betfair - hoping that they'd score and the odds would swing back. Then I layed Arsenal after they scored and finally backed the draw (as my I was getting nervous in the 85th minute). I ended being in a win-win situation with £50 if Arsenal won, £10 if Barca won and £40 if they drew. Gotta love Betfair!

Tantric shiiite? - Yep, I've had a few of those in my time. How about David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto (Yellow Magic Orchestra) in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence? Although I'm not sure either performance would strictly be described as a cameo. A cracking soundtrack too.

Nah, I love a good hot Sauna - battling that little voice in your head that is telling you to leave and get some cool air. On the expense front I got chatting to the maintenance guy at Fleming park once when they used to have a jacuzzi and he described it as "Bug soup". He told me that being communal and given that not everyone is as fastidious about their hygiene as perhaps they should be, ALL sorts of bugs from ALL parts of your body are washed into the water where they are warmed gently and then pushed into difficult to clean crevices - not to mention people's ear canals. He also told me that it cost FP as much to keep the tiny 6' by 6' jacuzzi heated and cleaned as the main 25m pool. I never used it again and when FP refurbished the Sauna area they removed the jacuzzi.

OK. Now we've finished playing the "My house had a greater exposure to the blast shock wave than yours" game, does anybody know what that noise was last night in Eastleigh? I find it a little strange that there was a significant explosion last night that apparently led to helicopters taking to the skies but there is no mention of it in the mainstream local media. The only reference I can find is this.

I agree with this. I use Betfair and find that there is something more exciting if you use an exchange where you can lay (bet against an event happening) too. It certainly gives you more chances to win and to rescue bets that are heading south. Plus as the odds you see are supplied my mug punters like me and not professional bookmakers you're 'likely' to see better odds on an exchange. When you can lay an event you find yourself able to place multiple bets on both sides of an the event happening. You can have great fun with sporting events like darts, one-day cricket or tennis where the likely outcome fluctuates many times during the match. You start off with a position, then if the odds change you can use some of the potential 'profit' to then back against your original bet and you can find yourself in a no-lose situation. There is an element of strategy to it that you don't get when the bookmaker makes the market. My brother-in-law bets quite heavily on Betfair and has had a lot of success in the under/over 2.5 goals per game markets. I agree with adriansfc that you should avoid predicting exact scores - unless you see it as the lottery it is.

Hmm. The Pedant Thread? The title conveys the likely contents of the thread so it certainly passes muster as a piece of Internet communication. I'm just not completely sure that it is accurate. If the thread was started by someone who thought of themselves as a pedant and perhaps wanted other pedants to contribute, then shouldn't it be "The Pedant's Thread" or "The Pedants' Thread"? If the thread content was designed to be anally or annoyingly fussy about the rules of language, then perhaps it should have been "The Pedantry Thread" or at a push "The Pedantic Thread"? To my eye, and I'm happy to be corrected by our more learned members, "The Pedant Thread" only works as a title if it is a thread about a specific, probably well-known pedant or if somehow the thread itself were the pedant - not the content, the originator or the contributors. If I'm right then all of the content should change to reflect that. I'd be obliged if all contributors to the thread could edit their posts accordingly. Well you started it.

I normally look in on these mix tapes and end up thinking just how out of touch with music I feel. But as you had a few artists that I have in my collection, I thought I'd give it a go. Very enjoyable.

Saw The Hold Steady in London a few months back. Was dragged along by a mate who had a spare ticket (due to an imminent divorce!). They were superb live.

I agree.

This makes a lot of sense to me.

Like the honestly with which NA explained the logic of the deal. Says that he knows that Jonno can be inconsistent but that he is a physical athlete who he thinks will benefit from being in the great environment we have at the club - coaching/medical/sports science. Looks like NA has thought it through and knows he's not getting the finished article. It reminded me of the logic behind the Kenwyne Jones signing.

That'll be it then. Seriously though, it's an odd one as he's hardly figured for the first team this year, so it doesn't feel like a tabloid inventing stories to fill pages. I guess it's the Wally Downes link?

Link to a little more detail here. Looks like it came from a story in The Mirror where it says that a bid was made by West Ham for Martin yesterday.
