  1. Arnhem 2015 and Marseille 1976 What a difference!!!!
  2. Still as one supporter was proud to boast about McInnes ... 'Proper Pompey'... (innit!!)
  3. I listened to this attempt at comedy hour in the car McInnes obviously sees himself as some kind of joker (perhaps that is, in fact, an apt description) It is fine to make jokes about rival fans/clubs but suggesting that it would be preferable that masonry from the crumbling stadium should fall on the head of a rival fan is probably not the wisest comment to be made by a senior official at Pompey. Again, whilst I am sure he was not too far from the mark with his very damning comments on Peter Storrie he could easily find himself at the wrong end of a writ. The new Manager comes with a reasonable CV at Chesterfield but his cheeky Scouse patter may not have gone down too well especially when he couldn't remember the names of some of his backroom staff. However he was able to wax lyrical about the U21's winning 5-0 at Burnham (who??) last night Interesting to see the ex Scummah, Scott Bevan, is GK coach at Pompey this season. To balance things up, I suppose you have to give Pompey fans some credit for selling 11,000 season tickets again (even though they are cheap) Interesting comparison here, someone at the club told me that if Saints sold all their hospitality for the season it equates to all the gate money Pompey get from an average 15,000 home attendance.
  4. Some time in the past there was a Monk holding a staff with a halo over his head This was the emblem on the first Saints shirt I ever bought (from Toomers I think) White with red piping Wore it to death as a kid
  5. He's out searching for Elvis!! Someone had to say it!!
  6. Yup 4-0 up from the 1st leg Five of us went to Vicarage Rd for the 'easy' second leg against a lower division team Lost 7-1. In a local chip shop after the game and a young Hornets fan in brand new gear (1st game I think) said to his Dad ...'Is it always like this at Watford'!!! Only when you play the Saints someone said
  7. Presumably he was Spanish and seemed to be supporting Saints By the sound of him he had lost his Care in the Community helpers on the way in. Still he caused no problems and actually got a few rounds of applause
  8. Understand that Southampton Ladies won the Women's FA Cup eight times between 1971 - 1983 Perhaps we should add this to our 'History'!!
  9. Seems to be growing in popularity Apparently it is only us and Man Utd, out of the Prem, who have not got a Ladies team Suewhistle may be able to comment on this but didn't the Southampton Ladies team do very well a few years ago when Sue Lopez was playing? I remember my uncle used to go and watch occasionally (in the 70's?) and I think they originally played on the Common or possibly the Sports Centre.
  10. Cant see any reference to this game anywhere else Doesn't seem to feature on the Pompey News site but they do have a story about the Portsmouth Walking Football team's recent success although they had to borrow a keeper from Eastleigh
  11. Fortress Fratton i'nt mate Surely there must be a mistake in these stats.
  12. If we believe that us fans have a good eye for a player, it is somewhat disappointing to read thro some of the QPR forum comments. Generally they are not too fussed about losing Caulker only the timing and the fact that he may be returned to them at some stage. They understand the wages saving of approx. £2m per year but the consensus seems to be that Caulker is a bit error prone on the pitch and a bit of a drinker/troublemaker off it. I do hope that this is not the case but, given the circumstances, I do hope he is a Gardos replacement rather than Toby's
  13. Made me smile!!
  14. Agree Well written and informative piece Well done!! I am sure you will be forgiven for the purchase if your 'half and half' scarf. Great to see (and hear) that a decent amount of Saints fans went across for the friendly especially in such close proximity to the Arnhem game. Particularly liked the response of the Feyenoord fans. Shows they are really 'Claisie' and hope there will be a few of them over to support us during the season
  15. Appreciate it has been covered before BUT: Mayuka £3.0m (residual value - NIL) Forren £3.5m (residual value - uncertain - possibly most of money back) Ramirez £11.0m (residual value - £3m??) Osvaldo £13m (residual value - nil) All on Cortese's watch with some suggestion one of his relative's was a fixer for these deals
  16. Did I read somewhere that we are supposed to be interested in Caulker from QPR? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. Pompey had a bigger capacity ground than us for approx. 80 years until the time we moved to St Marys Despite this our average league attendances are about the same, we are marginally ahead now and pulling away every year Interested that since the two sides met again in the same league (in 1960) Saints have had an average League home attendance of 21,000 whist Pompey's has been 14,000
  18. Mate of mine is a Hull City season ticket owner and really rates James Chester. He reckons that Chester is definitely worth £8m but hopes the Tigers sting us for the same fee as Shane Long which all Hull fans thought was a wonderful result for them
  19. I hope we will show the Dutch fans a lot of respect and together both sets of fans can make a cracking atmosphere
  20. Oh and there is a Harry Redknapp going on in the News in recognition of him predicting Pompey for promotion in his 'Blog'!!!!!!!! The News campaign to get Harry a knighthood will surely be re ignited now!!
  21. Strictly speaking their glory days were before England even entered the world cup (1950 if you are interested) But history is history and we mustn't forget the exploits of clubs like Wanderers who won the cup 5 times in the past. History has been very kind to them of course. What a high profile. Similarly the likes of Huddersfield, Div 1 champions three times in a row between the two world wars. Look where they are now On a different topic, Pompey have never had a player who was top scorer in the English top division. Saints players have achieved this five times Big Ron 1966/7 37 goals " " 1967/68 28 " Mick Channon 1973/74 21 " Phil Boyer 1978/79 23 " Kevin Keegan 1981/82 26 "
  22. FF Where would you play him though? As a central striker (where he started) or out wide on the right as per U21's?
  23. Just thinking of the relative positions of us and Pompey last night There we were beating a top rated European Club in their own back yard in front of 50,000 fans whilst Pompey were scrubbing around the south coast playing Bognor, Havant and Gosport in front of a couple of thousand. Last season we were winning at Old Trafford, scoring 8 and 6 at home whilst Pompey were getting beat by non League Aldershot. So many other disparities.
  24. Me too Wonder whether it was the same day or whether Matty is getting fit for a particular reason?
  25. Steve Thanks Keep up the good work
