Well that’s the big challenge for Spors isn’t it and why I’ve been saying it’s going to take a massive effort in the summer to turn the squad around. To be fair, if we can keep Rambo the no.2 goalkeeper is of less urgency, however it’s as much about wiping the slate clean of the losers as it is about improving overall squad quality.

To be honest I cannot see any advantage to keeping hold of McCarthy - he is symptomatic of the losing mentality from the last 3-4 years that has pervaded the club. His distribution has not improved, his mobility has got worse and he’s been part of a defence that has had the worst defeats in the clubs history inflicted on it. This is a player that needs to be exorcised from the club, along with a good number of others like Bednarek and Stephens…no sentimentality allowed.

As MLG said, there’s no reason initially for selling our ‘best’ players and let’s face it, even those are starting from a pretty low place - there’s not too many who will gain the opportunity of remaining in the Prem I would wager…they’ve shown themselves to be somewhat poor at that level. However my point was also that there is little hope of making all the changes needed due to the financial implications. What that boils down to is our first season in the Championship might not being our last this time around - scar tissue or whatever you want to call it, is going to run deep for some of this lot.

The only way forward is to retain our better players and improve from there. That means culling 14 players above and bringing in circa 8 - we don’t need a squad that big. It serves to remind us of the massive re-build job ahead in the summer, which frankly I don’t think will happen successfully…too much money involved.

If we continue to play 5 at the back and piddle around with the ball across the back line, we will come unstuck against teams that press us hard. And if a team has made it to the Championship then that’s through hard graft or a higher level of skill or both. So I don’t think for one minute we’ll get an easy game in either of the two derby games, unless of course the club upgrades the 1st team significantly which I’m really not confident about based on (a) long term existing contracts for poor players and (b) past performance in the transfer market.

I’m not sure I agree, but anyway the key issue was we were well short of competing with Leicester or Ipswich and not really significantly better than Leeds - why will that be any different next season? Unless Spors is the real deal and decisive when it comes to the cull, I can foresee SR making another almighty balls up of the summer window.

In short the only positive is that it’s a certainty that we’re going down and so there will be an opportunity to offload all the losers in the squad - i.e. that amounts to 10+ players. Let’s not forget the majority of this squad only just scraped into the playoffs and then only just beat Leeds, who could rightly feel hard done by given they were matching us at 90+ minutes. We were worse than Leicester and Ipswich in the Championship by some margin make no mistake and that gap grew in the Prem. So SR, Spors and whoever the Manager is, need to be planning NOW how to completely re-build the 1st team and start that process immediately the season ends. If that cull doesn’t happen then I fear the losing mentality will persist. If they get it right then things might start looking up.

I’m not sure why Spors was effectively brought in after the window (as if we were going to bring players in), but I sure hope he’s starting to work out a strategy to offload the losers in this squad. No sentimentality - just sell or release and get it right this time. Anything less will result in surefire torrid time in the Championship.

Not something I revel in, but I was among a few on here who called it early in us not looking likely to get past Derby’s record in any shape or form. Every area of our team is sub-standard in one way or another and there’s seemingly no competent management or coaching going on to even make a fist of the turd squad we’ve got. Definitely worse than the previous two relegation teams. I still can’t see us beating Derby’s record. Only players I’d keep on are Ramsdale, KWP, Welington, Fernandes, Big Les (if possible) and Dibling. Possibly keep Sulemana. The rest of ‘em should be sold or released - they’re losers. Juric out too and someone in who knows how to setup a solid 4231 / 433 and if necessary tweaks from there.

That nasty realisation that Bournemouth - yes, Bournemouth - have done the double over your team and not by just flukes…very convincingly.
