I didn't get into that conversation ?? ....but I never considered that a no.4 was a CB, but a right-sided midfielder:?.....or?

that means the " Saints' Bible " .....In that Number got it wrong then........pity but still a great publication..

Poch to leave at end of the season?
david in sweden replied to jasoneuelllfanclub's topic in The Saints
well David Moyes must be shaking in his boots then ........ -
When .Ken Monkou signed for Saints, he did start in a no.6 shirt, so I'll stand corrected on that one ...but in season 1994.95 he did play 31 games in a no. 3 shirt. Of course we can argue he didn't really have that role, and really played elsewhere, but it's in the book. as that. and....Lundekvam played his first game in Sept.1996 in a no.3 shirt (at least according to In That Number) and played out the rest of that season . The following season he began wearing no.6. I can't argue tactics, or where they actually played, or in which formation, maybe they were played out of position ?....BUT to me no.2 is a right back and no.3 is a left back.

After Jaidi's retirement, it was Mayuka and Wanyama for the African public. Whoever it is that's the " attraction " from South America...I'm not impressed.... (unless we mean Pochettino ?) However, one of my contacts (who is Croatian) is absolutely ecstatic over Lovren's signing........ (aren't we all ?)

Yes I'd agree, Kenna seemed to have one really great season, but Dodd was more consistant. Interestingly, we seem to get through a lot of full backs around that time. After Ray Wallace departed, (1989) we had the early partnership of Dodd / Benali, before Cherednik came on the scene. Micky Adams held down the LB spot for a while and so too Stuart Gray (before his career-ending injury). Both Dodd and Benali later managed to stay in the line-ups (wearing a no.4 shirt for a while), before Simon Charlton came in as a FB (remember him?) Doddsy seem to share the FB positions with Kenna, but few people recall that both Ken Monkou and (later) Claus Lunderkvam, both started as full backs...yet it would be yet another season before the Dodd / Benali partnership was properly re-established under Dave Jones. The Hiley / Colleter pairing wasn't very successful though, but just about this time (1999) Wayne Bridge debuted ....and the rest ...as they say ....is history.

I think I'd have to agree with that, ATM..... except that Gaston can't seem to manage more than 60 minutes-a-game.
-
uh oh ....shall we go back to accepting Clatteburg
-
brings back a few memories; the much under-rated Neil Maddison (Alan Shearers old mate from Tyneside) and RB Jeff Kenna ...sometime shortly before his move to Blackburn, I think? That move made way for Dodd.

FIRSTLY : if true, it would solve a number of obvious problems. I had the feeling that (although needed a CB at the time) Yoshida was also bought with the idea of being a " buddy " for Tadanari Lee ? ....who currently only gets an " occasional " game as an overage player with the U21's. SECOND: I think we did try to get another CB with the ill-fated purchase of Forran, but fortunately he was found out before we needed to play him. Finding another CB with any quality might be a problem, but hopefully the " transfer committee " have been doing their homework properly. As is the very necessary need of ANOTHER top class keeper, given that according to memory, there are several other Prem.keepers on the injured list at present -as well as Boruc.

Rickie's goal-scoring record (so far) already puts him in the top 10 of Saints' all-time goalscorers. If he can retain a reasonable level of fitness, he could be worth a bench place for several seasons to come. Teddy Sheringham, Kevin Phillips and Kevin Davies all kept a good standard way into their mid 30's - so why talk about ditching RL so quickly? Fitness is the real key; it cost us the services of MLT and Pahars far too early .

Biggest Saints goal of the last 4 years....
david in sweden replied to modern matron's topic in The Saints
(Maybe not the most popular player just now) but Jos Hooiveld with 1 goal v.WHam (h) won 1-0 and 1 goal v.W Ham (a) 1-1 ensured we got 4 points off them and we secured automatic promotion and they had to face the play-offs. -
besides all the above comments....whoever floated this story has gravely under-rated valuations. Bertrand - Age 24 already, but has only played 30-odd times for Chelsea ...and 100+ games out on loan-outs to clubs at a much lower level. Bertrand for Shaw plus £8 million.? that's a joke...... How much do they think Bertrand is valued at ?... with that sort of playing record I'd say.... £5 million tops ! The previous stories (and I use the word adviseably). it's been Man.U, Chelsea and Tottenham who were interested....and sums between £20-£30 million were mentioned.... Even my maths can't figure that one out.
-
that was my first reaction. too Colin. it may sound like a clever move, but if Sam were to get the boot, a new manager might not want to use RL regularly, and Rickie might find himself on the bench.... in the NPC next season. ....and any fading chances he might have of a seat on the Brazil plane (though most unlikely) would disappear totally.

After the " Lampard non-goal " fiasco , Sepp Blatter was forced into a " face-saving " action by introducing goal-line technology that will probably only be called upon a few times a season, whereas fans can watch Sky /BBC and see major injustices in the form of; penalty shouts, off sides and " diving " every week that go by without any recourse simply because ...." the ref didn't see it "... whereas the commentators and millions of watching fans know the real truth. A simple video replay takes less than 10 seconds and is often available from several different angles. If I can watch the game from a thousand miles away, so too can the fourth official sitting next to a monitor. The technology exists and it should be used, or it leaves open the dubious (and as yet unproven cases) for "match-fixing" by practically anyone involved with the game. What we see now is often pure fantasy, and sooner or later such events are going to cost some team ...a title-winning place, a relegation spot .....or even a major Cup Final win. I always felt it would be the total irony if the result of a World Cup, the highest level of football was wrongly decide because of a mistake by a match official. ...AND don't let anyone start quoting 1966. England won 4-2 ...the legality (or otherwise of that 3rd goal) was purely academic in the end.
-
you can watch this 100 times and IMO the defender is not "protecting " his face or body, or even attempting to turn his body away from the shot. If he were..... he would have raised his left arm ..but he doesn't. The ball passes his body and he raises his right arm... (which is by his side when the cross is made), and deflects the ball away. Handball. (what's "accidental " about that?). ----PENALTY!

I'm long enough in the tooth to take most of these stories with a pinch of salt, but does anyone really know ....if there is ANY truth in this?. Even if Rickie was interested he's hardly be likely to say so - and would he even admit it? To say that he is being offered 65K a week....Where does a figure like that come from...? and whose making the offer ?...the Mirror journo' .or ? reminds me of the Billy Connolly sketch ..it sounds like a committee decided that The only " committee " I can think of at Wham is Messers Gold and Sullivan?.. if so it's the same as " tapping up " a player and sidestepping the legal procedures by going behind the club's back. So either Wham are using the Mirror as a sounding board for an illegal approach.....or the Mirror man is making up the whole thing. Doesn't the truth mean anything anymore...or is this just " Football".. washing its linen in public ?

not having seen the match yesterday....no stream available in Sweden.... What was people's rating of Ings and Vokes. Could either of them really DAJFU ?
-
OK ...so money had different value in those days, but Delgado was a bit of a let-down - wasn't he?
-
I agree, but it sounds like the same thing we've been saying since 2008....
-
so the question is really; will he jump?...or wait to be pushed? (and then miss the chance of the WBA job)

FA Cup - Excitement or Disappointment?
david in sweden replied to Weston Saint's topic in The Saints
Depends on the present attitude to the FA Cup... Is the glass half-full?...or half empty? . The stadium may be, but as former winners' (albeit 38 years ago:rolleyes:) we surely feel a certain affinity to the competition. -
I'd like to think he'll be "under investigation ", but it'll just be a lot more " hot air and headlines " and in the end the referees committee will close ranks; Clattenburg will be acquited, canonised and praised " whilst the club will be further castigated for refusing to accept the " ruling of the officials " ...or some such rot ! Instead; Clattenburg (and Howard Webb, most likely) ..will be put forward as " role -models " for the refereeing profession.
