* agreed ** you are hearing his thoughts (albeit through an interpreter)..... I'm sure it'll take him some time to get upto pace (even after he starts to speak E.) .and to get to the standard of his interpreter. *** well I'd like to think he can communicate with the players, but in the last game at St.Mary's he was seen talking to Rickie Lambert during the game..if they can understand each other... there should be little problem with others in the side. I've heard an interview with RL .....and IMHO...you'd need a good ear for Scouse to know understand everything he says..

Ageed CB, but if MP is the type of "professional " that we are led to believe, then he'll wait a little bit longer before "going solo" in a press interview, when facing the media who have been raised on " mis-quoting " every poorly-chosen preposition and making a career-dam*ing headline of it. For my part, I'll be satisfied as long as the players understand what he means.. and st*ff the media.

Saint Or Sinner Nicola Cortese Drives Southampton On
david in sweden replied to Graffito's topic in The Saints
agreed (again) Professor, BUT ...all these vitriolic attacks on NC can scarcely be compared to some of those surrounding Lawrie McMenemy - after we were relegated in 1974 - when he'd only been in charge for 6 months. ....but of course there was no web site at that time to record all our disapproval, and it was down to letters to the "Echo"....but time told a different story. Eight years later, we were top of the Div.1 table, (read Prem.) with FIVE current / former England captains in the squad. -

tough luck Turkish !...you'll have to get in a bit quicker next time, then. -
well that takes care of them......but I think that, given the present injury list, the first team will almost pick itself.... but it will be interesting to see who is on the bench.....?
-
Agreed...in fact I might say, it's by near impossible as he hasn't played two full games and only been on as a late sub. You can't begin judge a player on less than half-a dozen games and then it depends on the rest of the team's performance as well as their own personal input. ....I just wonder if he can play left back ?
-
.except that I'm sure I recall " someone " on here quoted: (couldn't find it ).. that the Liebherr bid was on the table at the end of May....and the Administrator didn't consider/investigate it ....it was some time afterwards that the Pinnacle "exclusivity bid was made.??

Cortese and Le Tissier arrange meeting
david in sweden replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
This greatest ever / favourite thing gets out of hand -doesn't it? My (late ) father used to rave about Bill Rawlings, Ted Drake and Charlie Wayman, but they all played in different decades. It 's impossible to compare players, because of the change of personnel...where the team was playing ....and that individuals contribution to the team (of their day)..or .....if you are only looking at stats. In that respect...MLT scored 105 league goals in 6 seasons between 1989-1995. His goals kept us up in those years.. and the same can be said of Ron Davies scored 134 between 1966-1973 ......whilst George O'Brien scored 154 League goals from 1959 - 1965. George scored most of his goals whilst we were a top end side in Div 2 (without ever getting promoted and he left the club before we actually achieved it). . All these players were heroes of their day for obvious reasons, and I haven't ignored Mick Channon but his annual goal tally rarely reached past 20, but were amassed over a period of 15 seasons or so. I never like to compare these " greats ", but am glad I had the chance to see them all play. BUT what's all this doing in a thread about Cortese and Le Tissier? -

Terry Paine scored 11 goals ....in his first season in the (then. Div1). He actually completed 8 seasons in the top flight ...around 320 games and scored a total of 38 goals.....PLUS about 100 assists to Ron Davies (I should think) ...though it might have been more. -
they did but it was so violent, it couldn't even get an ' X' certificate. When Denis tackled someone - they stayed tackled, and didn't come back for more.

Campbell Forsyth.....No I didn't make him up. It sounds like you're younger than my children ! Dec 1965. He was bought from Kilmarnock, who had won the Scottish title.(one of the rare occasions when neither Celtic or Rangers took the title), won 4 Scottish caps by the time he signed for Saints. He played throughout that season.....and we won promotion in May 1966. After starting the Div.! season in August, he broke a leg in collision with our LB Denis Hollywood in the home game v.Liverpool. He eventually returned to first team duty in August 1967 by which time Eric Martin had become the regular keeper.(.Have you heard of him ?) Sadly CF had a weight problem due to the long lay-off, and had lost a lot of his former skill and played his last game in Jan 1968. A great character, though.

How many points needed for "safety"?
david in sweden replied to anothersaintinsouthsea's topic in The Saints
I like your stats. "southsea", .....but ON AVERAGE - one point per game has often been the benchmark for survival ....as you pointed out so well...it's a rare exception for a side with 39+ to go down, and yet clubs have survived ..on 34 ! -
there you are TDD ...there are some things we agree on. I seem to think that I'd seen him in several games ...a few years back ...Poland?, Celtic ?.and really rated him. It would be interesting to look back - to when he was signed - and read some of the criticism of AB - before he's even put on a Saints shirt ! Anyway, he certainly fulfils the criteria I'd written up several times last season..namely.. that we should have TWO international keepers on the books-------many other Prem. sides have already. Goalies, by nature are a breed apart in football and often have personal characteristics that amuse fans, and Boruc already had a reputation for such when at Celtic. One memory of this was the 1965-6 promotion season, when Campbell Forsyth kept goal for Saints. Unlike many goalies who are used to staying on their line and being guarded by their full backs, Forsyth let fly in a rich vein of colloquial Scots vocabulary and in not so polite terms..told his defenders to get up the field..... and out of his penalty area. I like " characters" in football.....as I hope that we have many future seasons with Artur as a dependable custodian at SFC.

.. is there some hidden significance to that statement that I've missed.... .or ?
-
..or even 40 years earlier....that was a great time, too.

Cork - Schneiderlin partnership, changed under Pocchetino?
david in sweden replied to Neef's topic in The Saints
if we are looking at a 4-2-3-1 formation, then Cork is a better defender (and yet to score a goal), whereas Schneiderlin looks more aggressive playing further up, and getting more goal chances than he ever had before. -
think you're doing him a slight injustice.....61 apps and 5 goals in two seasons. we bought him from Arsenal for 300K ...and two years later sold him to Man.City (who?)...for 500K. He was certainly not the best we've ever had, but he was no Ali Dia.
-
well ..fortnightly, anyway.
-
SEVEN pages already ......is this thread ...still going? There must have been enough sweat and energy spent on it to build an extension by now. my make in this is ....sell out games and get new record gates every match.....and a list of disappointed fans who couldn't get tickets....and then it becomes a talking point ..until then - no go!

Is Vegard Forren close to playing yet
david in sweden replied to Miltonroader07's topic in The Saints
quite right. If he's not up to starting a Prem. game yet, he certainly won't be starting an International - even if it is a friendly. ....just their (polite)way of saying they haven't forgotten about him. -

sometime soon ....when he's "Saints fit "....and learns to run faster. -
Cortese and Le Tissier arrange meeting
david in sweden replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
that part I agree with ..EVERYONE who has served the club for 50 years deserves a statue...(like Ted Bates did) .....so .....who'd the next name in line then ?
