Me neither, it suited both countries at the time of WWII and occasionally since. Be under no illusion though that if America needed to side with either Russia or China our 'file' would fall off the table and into the bin marked 'inconsequential collateral damage'.

Peter Reid Parts Company With Plymouth Argyle
EastleighSoulBoy replied to Gorgiesaint's topic in General Sports
This just in from an Argylle mate: Sounds like Reid was more than honourable with the Club. -
I know what you mean but, just a thought as you know me, has it occured to you that people don't actually 'say it' in so many words but tend to 'allude' to things so that if they get found out they cannot actually be tied down to 'it'? It's quite clever stuff. You're right also that those who are going to be naughty are hardly going to be advertising the fact on an internet forum are they? Which makes me think that you and I are on the same wavelength.

Saints 4 Birmingham 1 - Reactions Thread
EastleighSoulBoy replied to St Chalet's topic in The Saints
Lot's of more important things (non footy) currently on my mind but this afternoon eased my worries for a while. Very happy with Frazer's performance and the substitutions were timed well. Strength in depth is what we wanted and we almost have perfection in that quarter. Jos is settling and super KD was magnificent. Love this playing out from the back but it's not always possible. Last player mention for David Connolly, works hard, never seems to tire and is a great asset to the squad. I'm beginning to think that an auto spot is very attainable but wouldn't it be great to go up as Champions? -
I think you'll find my comment about Wiki is much the same as yours although, being a long time fan of Motown there are many interesting snippets which come up and I have to say that the particular one I quoted is the more accepted reason. Logically it doesn't stand up, if I was worried that my name was close to being a derogatory term then my choice of change would have been a million miles away from it! Yours Sincerely Robin farquaharn b'stard.

Sorry I have not replied sooner, 3 post rule and a gravely ill Mother being my priority. Gay, as a term for homosexual has been in use probably for far longer than you may think. Although, as with many 'Americanisms' we Brits tend to lag a little on the timescale before a word enters more common usage. There is, certainly, more than one reason that is known for the surname change although the one I mention is the more prevalent and is not even debunked by Snopes! http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=21684 Note how snopes quote, from another source, the use of the word gay as being in use well before the 1950s! The inevitable use of wikipedia entries neither confirms or denies any truth in the real reason. From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin Gaye Early career (1958 - 1962) Citation 13. "Before releasing his first single in May 1961, he altered his last name to "Gaye", later stating that he added the 'e' because "it sounded more professional" and to emulate what Sam Cooke had done before releasing his first secular record following his split from the Soul Stirrers. A famous story about the name change came from author David Ritz, Gaye's confidant in later years, who said Gaye had said that he wanted to "quiet the gossip" of his last name and to distance himself from his father." Back on Snopes there is even reference made to Cary Grant using the term gay in the 1938 film Bringing Up Baby. Marvin Snr was a big, both positive and negative, influence on Marvin Jnr's life. Indeed Snr himself had his lifestyle called into question on several ocassions with allegations of 'cross-dressing' etc. Let me state at this juncture I am fully aware, having several gay friends, that a cross dresser is not necessarily homosexual and vice versa. Certainly it would appear that MPG was teased as to his surname and it would appear odd that he did not choose to change his surname to something which had no semblance at all to his birth name. Jnr lived in a certain amount of awe of Snr and another reason given for the name change is that Jnr did not want to 'embarass' his father by pursuing a career as a secular singer when his father was a preacher. http://whatsinaname-jan.blogspot.com/ http://kikoshouse.blogspot.com/2010/01/marvin-gaye-appreciation.html So it's rather difficult to debunk the reason I gave as an 'urban myth'. Certainly within the hallowed portals of 2648 West Grand Boulevard, and Gaye's latter life confidants, it is the common and generally accepted reason for the name change rather than an affectation. On a personal note, if I had felt so affected then my change would have been rather more drastic, removing all possible links! Thanks Aardvark, just a little further information; http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=gay

MPG actually changed the spelling, adding the e, of his surname because of the connotations.

But then God would not have anywhere to put the tube when he wants to give Earth an enema.

What an utter load of obelisks! He's quoted as 'loving it here' and if any of those Pardew rumours are slightly true then he's not going to even contemplate it.

I think that this is a good idea. Just one down side, with people being people, how do we gauge what makes a comment disrespectful and how would it be dealt with?

Pedantry at it's most succulent. Nice one Granty!

Simon, of all the Bompey who came here for a chat/banter what have you last season, you seemed to be the sensible one. Others came here for a wind up and got bitten, just like that lad who started some crap on FB. I seriously do question going on other fan sites for a wind up but then again each to their own. Most of us up here did have an affection for AFCB, I know it may sound patronising to some but there seriously never has been a rivalry, unlike there is between us and the skates. Even when you were promoted and your fans were heard on the radio, singing about coming to SMS, it was viewed as a healthy, fun thing. The trouble is your WUMs took it too seriously, started to get nasty with it and then the rest is history, even Eddie tried it on. I don't wish your club ill but I'll not put any money into buckets for AFCB again. I think you are stuck with Eddie for the moment which sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place. The conundrum is do you placate him and hope he comes good, again, or hope someone buys you? At the moment it's going to be hard trying to find a buyer, even Plymouth are struggling!

I think Mr Mitchell would be more welcome in that eastern part of Hampshire, why doesn't he go and 'rescue' them? A partnership made in hell.

You obviously expect us to believe UHY (A.A.) after all their shenanigans and manuevering to exclude establishments, such as HMRC, from their dues? So the football club repaid the fans who paid out of their own pockets to some of the charities? Don't be so naive. [h=3][/h]

Back in the early 80s my mate and I went to the Fountainhead, Winchester, to see Trevor Walters (reggae singer). We walked out when it became clear, after his third effort, that he was miming.

Stupidest thing anyone has ever said

Ford plant Swaythling. Large machine has been stopped for about two hours and the plant is in danger of grinding to a halt. Maintenance have identified the fautly piece of equipment and have swapped in, and out, some eight replacements, with no luck. The supervisor points at one of these pieces of kit and announces "Put that one back in, of all those that don't work, that one doesn't work the best" -
Specially as the SAAB plant is in Trollhattan.
