Screaming kids (as already mentioned) And several spaced out fans thinking what the f/ck am I doing here. I may well be one of them.

I can't argue about the numbers. our away support numberswise is amazing compared to what it was in the 90's, BUT ...... with a few exceptions (the two examples you gave fit the criteria as fantastic support) I don't think the support is as passionate as it was at away games. I've been to loads of away games where you look around and see people sat down not singing songs or showing any passion or support. At least in the past those that went got behind the team.

IMHO playing anything other than a full strength side would be morally wrong. You've got Notts County and Dagenham fighting for their lives and it'd be bad sportsmanship to play a weakened side.

50/50. The game is no longer pivotal so a spontaneous rush of adrenalin isn't gonna happen. That said if a lot of people are wasted you never know.
