There's a lot to be said for mixing pensioners and "yoof"; plenty of senior schools find it benefits the latter. Oh and btw GM is being pilloried for his racist views . . . ageism is just as bad. (Not that I'm a paid up member of the PC brigade - far from it - it's just that I'm approaching the age where one is beginning to notice it!).

IMO sentiment is an integral part of running a successful club.

Do you remember that great film "The Dambusters" starring Michael Redgrave as Barnes Wallis and Richard Todd as Guy Gibson? They're remaking it for today's audience.
