  1. Why bother debating whether Truss' policies were part of an election manifesto. Most things Governments do were never in a manifesto, and many things in a manifesto never get done. As for 'electing' the PM, nobody does it. The Post of Prime Minister is awarded on the prerogative of the Monarch; usually this happens after a GE when, with the assistance of the Privy Council, the Monarch asks the MP most likely to command a majority in the Commons if he/she wishes to attempt to form a Government. If there is no clear majority, as with Cameron's first term, it will come down to who is likely to form a majority coalition - as leader of the largest party DC was asked, however it would equally have been possible for the Labour leader to try. If a PM leaves office during his/her term, the process of selecting a successor follows the same process; logically the successor within the majority party will get the request. How each party chooses it's leader in The House is entirely up to it, they can draw straws or play Rock Paper Scissors if they so wish.

Russia has already blown at least a couple of dams. Generally their tantrums are to fire S300 SAMs at civilian housing. He should only consider a tactical nuke if he is happy with losing what's left of the Black Sea Fleet, because I am sure NATO's non-escalatory response has that as an option.

Follow up; From the CCTV video there is a possibility that the explosion was actually under the collapsed carriageway, in which case some force would certainly have affected the other carriageway, and probably the pillars. Also, there is video after the fire was extinguished that shows at least some damage and possibly warping of the road bed on the ' surviving' side. I think any heavy loads intended for that route are out of the question for quite a few days.

Only one carriageway has collapsed into the water, but we dont't know if the supports under the bridge have been damaged sufficient to impact the load carrying capacity of the other one, either by the initial blast or the fire from the train spilling over.

It is reported that there is actually no direct rail connection through the 'land bridge' via the occupied territory, and what there is is in artillery range for UA.

There are reports that the Russians are moving all children from Kherson and it's immediate surroundings, ( those bits they still occupy ), to Crimea for a "holiday at the best resorts".
  25. According to the front page of the Telegraph, the freeze on lifting tax thresholds introduced by Rishi Sunak will leave 'average households" nearly £1500 worse off over the next 2-3 years, and the proportions of people paying tax at either the basic rate or higher rate will reach record levels. It also says that even JRM is in favour of raising benefits in line with inflation.
