Trump held his rally and stoked up the crowd who then went to the Capitol intending, at the least, to intimidate the Legislature into doing Trump's bidding and overthrowing the EC vote, as Trump and Giuliani continued to do whilst the House was in lockdown. This is by definition insurrection: "an act or instance of revolting against civil authority or an established government". Thankfully the Constitution was adhered to, VP Pence refused to succumb to Trump's exortations to exceed his lawful powers, and ultimately Trump and the protesters reduced the level of opposition inside the House as 4 of the 6 planned objections to State certifications were effectively withdrawn as a consequence of the invasion. Do you seriously think that the people trapped inside the building whilst armed guards stood at barricaded doors thought "It's not that serious - just a bunch of lads letting off a bit of steam. Just like Maidstone on a Saturday night".

The problem in interpretation is that whilst the Guidelines state "village, town, part of city', the actual Law leaves it to the discretion of the Police, and does not contain that phrase, ( as far as I can make out ).

Still comes down, currently, to an extremely loose definition of 'local'. I seem to recall in LD1 they said an hour's exercise, which for me meant I could go 9 miles out and 9 miles back. If they want to define 'local' as 5 miles, so be it. But currently the regs permit me to do what I do.

Sort of defeats the purpose of cycling as a form of exercise. Even the least proficient cyclist will probably be doing 12 miles in an hour.

I can ride due East from my home, during the day, for 9 miles and not see another soul other than those travelling in vehicles. The road passes across largely uninhabited salt marsh. Alternatively I can divert slightly to the South and ride across the drained peat moss, again ending up 9 miles from home, and meeting a similar number of people. How far from my home counts as 'local' ?

Riding bikes is not contrary to the guidance, driving for a walk in the country is not. In fact, both are encouraged as you are supposed to get out and take exercise.

First, the Govt would have to produce a definitive list of who qualifies as a key worker. Is a shelf stacker in Sainsbury's ? Is a railway track maintainance worker ? Is a bus driver ? Is a dustbin man ?

And it could be argued that CoViD patients are taking resources from victims of cardiac arrest or severe pulmonary problems. There are a limited number of ICU beds and multiple ways to end up there.

Icy roads mean more. Less traffic means the potential for more careless driving. We could argue this back and forth, but even if you stay locked up at home you could fall down the stairs.

So having a "good reason" prevents crashes ?

Why don't they ban car driving then ? How many people are seriously injured every day in crashes and end up in hospital ? Whilst they are at it, ban the sale of power tools to reduce the risk of nasty accidents.

What if all the pedestrians he passed were within half a mile of his home, either on the outbound or inbound stretches ? The advantage of cycling in the countryside is precisely that you will meet far fewer people, and be further away from them. You will get closer to people, and come across more of them, if you are out for a walk than you will on a bike.
