I would expect somewhere like Georgia to be next or that separatist part of Romania. And of course if NATO failed to respond to an attack on one of its members it would end the organization, but it would not be the first time in history an alliance fractured because it was unwilling to fulfill its treaty obligations. IF say Russia decided to launch a surprise and rapid attack on a Baltic state occupying it before we could respond, it would be a different prospect to take it back than to defend it. The logistics of sending forces to that location would be a significant hinderance.

I checked with the guy I share an office with, who is very much average, and he could point to Charleston, WV but did not know where Estonia was.

So I take it we have given up on Ukraine, its now Russian and we accept it. Looks like BoJos wrist slap did not stop them like MLG told me it would.

Taking peoples money is not the same as physically stopping them. Dissuading someone from action is different from preventing that action. I do not believe that the UK has the power to dissuade and the US and UK do not have the will to militarily oppose. You are right that could be a world war. Trump would not stop Putin for positive reasons, Putin could afford to bide his time under Trump being able to do what was necessary to be ready, knowing Trump was not got going to stop him and even possibly aiding him in his ultimate goal. Once Trump was gone Putin can jump in knowing that Trumps bomb throwing from the side will help disrupt any US response. TLDR Trump doesn't prevent Putin, but delays and assists Putin. EDIT As I have no posts. Assist by looking the other way, helping on sanctions, telling him stuff in the meeting which had no other American in it, being a dumb ass and letting slip sluff he should not have. Not allowing the US to prepare for this kind of eventuality. Being not bright to figure out he is being used. I ascribe this to incompetency rather than malice. I am not obsessed I merrily live in the US these days and it is close at hand, and it was rather hard not to see it on a daily basis for all that time and you can see how it still shapes the discourse.

Bet Ukraine wished it joined NATO a long time ago. We are obviosuly going to do nothing and Putin knows it. Britain and the EU have been distracted for 6 years dealing with its divorce, US distracted by Trump and whatever shinny object has his attention now, while Putin has been preparing for this moment. I agree he would never have invaded under Trump, but only because he provided great cover for preparation as soon he was gone Putin would strike. Its not like if Trump is re-elected that he will give it back. Those social justice warriors are not going to fight to prevent Ukrainians oppressions under Russian control. And the republicans look ready to cuddle up to Uncle Putin because Trump tells them too. And mean while back in Blighty you got BoJo, who is our modern day Churchill?
  8. I think you need to separate out categories. Some comedians were funny in their time but the world moved on and you have heard that same a joke a thousand times since. Others were making jokes about things we no longer take amusement in because our culture has changed, some have been doing the same schtick for too long and part of what makes things funny is an unusual juxtaposition but if you already know what is going to happen then the jokes has worn thin. Even initially innovative comics will reveal their process so you can see the next iteration. It is also weird to see the same act several times where you see practiced spontaneity and a performance rather than comedy. Other things that are unfunny include pointing out the bleeding obvious, having too much contrived setup and just saying the same thing over and over. For those three reasons one of my least liked comedies was Absolutely Fabulous. But it was still an improvement on watching the News.
  9. From the science I have read I am expecting that in a few years time we will be seeing studies showing health effects from having contracted Covid in the past and would rather I was not be in that group if possible.
  10. I thought we were going back to normal when vaccinations were widely distributed, however that turned out not to be the case. So while things are looking better now, I am pretty sure we will going back into restrictions at some point when another wave travels the globe again. For that reason, I am going to personally continue to mask up regardless, because it might be too late to react once something is spotted it as it tends to be everywhere already
  11. Start of the match was a bit choppy, but it improved with time as it got more flow. We are a less balanced team without a a left footer at LB, but it did not matter, KWP runs were awesome. Are we going to end up with "inverted full backs" like we now have inverted wingers? I hope not. Everton's defending was terrible, I was hoping for that second because they looked fragile and if we got a second they would surrender and I would not have to be nervous that they got a lucky break. The team has really gelled since Christmas. I am starting to think they were going easy the first half of the season to have the energy for the second half.
  12. I haven't heard the words "Dell sized mentality" for a while on here, so you can have this one for free.
  13. But could we share that with 8,000 new friends? I do think that the size of the stadium does have some impact on the perception of club size, West Ham for most of the time I have been aware of football have been a comparable club to us in league position and reputation, but since moving they seem to have been elevated in the zeitgeist. There is no logic to it, no reason, just a weird perception thing. Tottenham have only in recent years put themselves back towards the upper reaches, the larger stadium is not for income, match day revenue pails compared to TV money, and the cost of the thing is going to take a while to offset, but it does enhance their reputation. Not sure Maine Road would have the same appeal for Middle eastern oil money. Part of the reason that I think Newcastle attracted their new owners. But just having a large stadium is no guarantee, Sunderland have never been able to use the size to build successfully. And counter examples like Chelsea, who have long been restricted but external funding has assisted them. I think we could probably sustain a larger stadium, Unfortunately new construction will be expensive and the new seating it produces would be for tickets that would be expected to be lower in price so either other tickets get more expensive relatively for us to suffer (By us I mean you, as I live in America these days) or the price does not justify the additional expenditure. But I am not sure it is only about income, that is my point.
  14. A key difference is that West Ham did not have to build their own stadium, similarly Man City. But if any large sporting contest would like to let us have their used stadium I am game.

If any of you have read Sun Tzu you will know that to win a war with out fighting is the ultimate goal. So if Ukraine stay intact without conflict then the west has prevailed, not lost.
  17. The closest paralel I can think of is When Alex Ferguson left MU. Didn't quite get it right though....
  18. Great game to watch. My thoughts team looks so much more balanced with a left footed fullback. Man U has good players but is a bad team, that is the difference between the two Manchester clubs. If the incident had happened at the other end that would have been a penalty, no doubt about it. Why on earth did it take so long for VAR to rule out a goal that was offside twice and really obviously, were they trying to find some thing to justify the goal? Because it is starting to look a little corrupt in the VAR room. Foster is a lot better than McCarthy right now. We have seen that pressing teams have not been able to keep up that intense level of play all season. Teams have shown early results and been lauded, only for their form to fall away down the stretch. I am wondering if we were playing within ourselves early in the year to be able to play like this in the second half of season when tiring teams can be picked off, and that party explains our recent success. PS my wife enjoyed the game too. She was cheering for Southampton now Chicharito no longer plays there.

  20. This is why I think Romeu is so key for our team, as he lets JWP play his game without having to worry about covering, I dread the day when Romeu can not play at the same level anymore.
  21. f**k yeah! That is all
  22. Not off side hit another player first, should have been a penalty
  23. I think the rise in the acceptance of authoritarianism at this moment in time is because there is not really any significant totalitarian adversary to point out where having liberty is a source of resistance now the memory of Soviet communism is fading and those who opposed fascism are passing. There is a general swing back to these things as a response to not all the worlds problems being solved. I am reminded of the word of the economist Hiram Minsky who said "stability causes instability" He was talking about economies and markets but these are a human manifestation like politics is. When economies are stable in an attempt to find better returns people start taking riskier bets assuming that everything will be alright, ultimately causing problems (you can probably think of examples of this, I am going to leave it vague to not have to argue over specifics) Well what we have had recently is stable politics for a while with no significant outliers, this has produced the opportunity for radical elements to ferment with nothing clearly problematic to fixate on needing a solution.
  24. I use to think that here in the US, but the republicans are in the process of sanctioning people who opposed Trumps worst parts. It might very well go the same way, UKIP was the british equivalent to the Tea Party here, and a lot of that has drifted in to being main stream Tories. I still am hoping that the British parliamentary system can hold out, but the fact that a man of BoJo's limited ability was able to become PM makes me think the system is not as robust as hoped.
  25. I am not worried about the immediate future, but as that contract winds down the uncertainty might affect the kind of signing we can make. But then again we can now definitely plan as opposed to having them leave and scrambling to back fill with what's available at the time.
