Well, Portugal won last night with Jose Fonte and not Cedric as he is injured. It took a while for all the players to adjust to Puels new formation. Latecomers to the team had less chance to adapt to this new regime. It appears more settled now. IMO the latecomers were Fonte and Soares who were away on international duty throughout the summer. Maybe all this Fonte bashing should be put to bed, he is our Captain and should be respected as such.

Portugal is his country and he is proud to play for them so late in his career. He explained quite clearly that through the summer he was unable to post anything than that about his country. This may be something from the Portugal camp. I personally don't think we should read anything any deeper than he played for Portugal, they won the Cup, he was ex static especially to be in the team. He took a holiday with his family. He returned to his birth town to be given the freedom of the town and in turn gave his team shirt to the town hall. He then returned to Saints to be under a new manager. Quite a lot happened in a few weeks. He is still with us.

It should. Fonte has made himself quite clear, don't read anything further into it. He plays football for Southampton, he is our Captain. Stop picking the scab.

If he goes, he may only be offered a one year contract. Utd have a policy for over 30's one year contracts only. Also apparently he is not Mourinhos first choice. Trouble is, Mourinho is spent out so he has to go cheap.

Whatever we all say, it's virtually killing us all and I bloody well wish .saints would help dry up and get the whole argument settled. After the money on players Southampton have made quibbling over a few quid here and there is xxxxing senseless. WE NEED TO MOVE ON!

I thought VVD had signed for 5 years? I know contracts are meaningless these days, so why bloody bother with them except oh yes, a greedy club can cash in as well so, it works both ways. Trouble with Saints is as someone else said they lack ambition over cash. I have to agree, especially in latter years. It's all been how much we can grab back and haven't spent much of it improving the team. Having said that, players who went to Liverpool havent done well for either England or their own team. Millions spent for a mediocre team last season.

Truthfully, I think he was very proud to play for his country. That's the way the Portuguese are, unlike their England counterparts. Sitting on the bench was not for him, running out onto the pitch at the outset, anthem etc was for him. IMO, if he goes to Utd, he will NEVERTHELESS run on the pitch for Portugal again he will be lost in amongst the rest as Lambert was for England. FOnte should note, same age, glory club etc does not equal glory, more obscurity. I repeat Schniedelin sat on the bench enough not to get a game for France.

Spot on. If you want to play in the Portuguese team which , he obviously does don't bother with one of the big teams you won't get a match and therefore won't be seen. SChneiderlin was a prime example. He only got into the French team because someone was sick. I don't think he got a game? Spend your time on the bench, you may get the cash but none of the glory. Fonte has loved the glory, just look at his Instagram account he enjoyed himself. He is still in the papers here in Portugal after donating his Ho E short to his home town.

POrtugal won the euros, Greece gained immigrants. I agree, he isn't irreplaceable however there is a world shortage. Let's keep what we have if we can.

If you take the emotion out of it, he's very replaceable . Great servant that he's been , he's shown signs of tipping over the top of the hill . WHAT!!!! If it wasn't for Fonte and Cedric coming on board, Portugal would not have won the final. The Portuguese know this and anyone who watched the final and the matches they played in prior know this. You may or may not be a Mourinho fan, we personally are not. Do you think Lambert enjoys where he is at the moment. I bet he looks back and wonders what might have been. I think Fonte has a bit more about him. (Hope)

I would hope that Jose Fonte has more about him than trivia. Usually, Portuguese can see where they are better off. Jose has been seen as a hero in his town of Pinafiel. This has meant a lot to his family. Yes, he can go to Utd with Mourinho but, will he get a game? Will he end up like Rickie Lambert? My bet is, he will end up like Lambert. What is the point of that other than money? He has made his family proud of him, the whole family are benefitting from this. Don't be foolish Fonte stay put and ensure a game at Saints and a game for Portugal.

Fonte would be crazy to leave Southampton. He should contact Rickie Lambert, his move spelt the end of his career. Lambert was used to poach other players then thrown away like a bit of old rag. I would imagine Lambert looks back now wonders what might have been. He had just got into the England team etc, etc. Fonte has just got into the Portuguese team, they used worn out Carvalho and to be honest they looked doomed. IMO they bought on Cedric and Fonte and their fortunes changed. If Fonte is looking to move, which I very much hope for his sake, his career as well he doesn't. When teams with big money come knocking it isn't all glory. Sniedelin is another sideliner, barely made the French team if someone else wasn't sick. DId he play? He always got a game for France when he played for Saints. Look and learn players and especially Fonte who was so proud to play for his country.

Between Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares, they have both put Southampton on the map. Really and truly not too many people had heard of Fonte over here in Portugal. Cedric, has been in and out of the team, Jose no. It's all change now though. Most definitely they have heard of these two guys.
