  1. Just curious--as an American I cannot tell--is Marcotti someone who is considered to know what he is talking about?
  2. Consider me to have responded appropriately.
  3. To be fair some of Woodward's books about President Bush were pure garbage.
  4. Depends how good our other signings are but I would estimate less than one per year.

A rather peculiar response to losing a girl friend. Our total wage bill for the year ending 30/6/2014 was 63 million pounds. Your calculations are off. The club undoubtedly knows what it has to spend and it appears that it does not want to spend money it does not yet have.
  6. Keep in mind that for European competition 4 of the home grown players have to be club trained and we only have two club trained players for next season: Isgrove and Schneiderlin. Once Schneiderlin goes our European roster is limited to 22 players. I doubt we are going to sign three home grown English players who will not be eligible to play in Europe (or, for that matter, three non-home grown players who will not be eligible to play in Europe because their places are taken by three home grown players). As the original player noted, I discussed this on my blog: http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/2015/01/southamptons-european-roster-issues.html http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/2015/06/southamptons-european-roster-update-18.html
  7. At least we would find out which players were dying to get out of Southampton.
  8. No it isn't. They believe they are in the process of putting together a good recruitment department that will reliably sign good young players and develop them to the point where they can qualify regularly for the Champions League. They believe this will allow them to retain some or most of these good players because they will be able to offer champions League football and salaries that are in the top ten world wide. They are strong believers in Moneyball and analytics and they think that with financial fair play rules in effect they will be able to compete with Manchester United and the other rich clubs by being nearly as rich, but smarter. So far their plan has not been a success, but it has not been a complete failure either. It will look less good if they do not qualify for the Champions League this year. If that happens they will probably fire Rogers and replace him with someone who gets less input into recruitment. This is moderately informed speculation based upon how they run the Boston Red Sox. Having said that, in recent years, the plan has not worked as well as expected with the Red Sox either so they may be over estimating their ability to hire the right people.
  9. I think the chances of this happening are pretty close to zero. He will become not good enough or unhappy long before he will be ready to retire.
  10. Sorry I don't know my Southampton history but was that three broken legs or two?
  11. I would agree if Koeman does.
  12. Did they walk into a bar (pub) and, if so, what funny thing happened next?
  13. Thank you.
  14. Lots of people seem to know who this guy is. Because I am an American and not from Southampton I do not. Can someone enlighten me or would there be legal consequences?
  15. I can't speak to Leeds, but in the last several years neither Newcastle nor Villa did anything that resembled replacing the players they lost even with cheap untried foreigners. Also, cheap untried foreigner is not really fair description of the players we have found so far to replace our departing players.
  16. I just published "Milestone 30,360" http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/ http://redsloscf.blogspot.co.uk/
  17. Global warming preparation?
  18. I have listed the home grown players by club in this blog post. http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/2015/04/greg-dyke-and-his-terrible-horrible-no.html
  19. Shall I start a new thread, with a poll, on this subject.
  20. 1) The initial question was a joke question. I did not add the poll. If you are saying only someone who has never been to England would tell a joke I must disagree for two reasons. First, I vaguely recall seeing English people telling jokes on TV and, second, I have been to England (but not Southampton). 2) My recent post of Football Manager wages for the Premier League on my blog did not actually analyze anything. And I made clear the source of the information. Moreover, so long as you are aware of the limitations on your information there is nothing wrong with using FM to analyze football wages. In fact, it is likely the best available source for people without inside information. 3) If you read my blog in which I suggest the use of the Rooney rule, you would know that I did not "wholeheartedly support" it and instead recommended a modified version. Since I have been to England and since other people who are actually from England have also endorsed the use of the Rooney rule, this claim was sell evidently false. In my view, people who oppose the Rooney rule tend to not actually understand what it involves, favor continued racial discrimination, or think it won't work. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, why do you believe a modified version of the Rooney rule won't work in English football? Here is a link to my blog post in which I support the Rooney rule: http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/2014/11/racism-in-english-football-and-rooney.html I wonder if this post will derail my own inherently derailed thread? Go for it. It would probably bring out the Portsmouth fans to stuff the ballot box. Unfortunately, I agree--although I do hold out hope that Rodgers will make more bad transfer decisions. Three out of five is not bad. When I travel back in time five years I will have better things to do. Or rather I did have better things to do.
  21. So the key thing is to keep him happy until February without letting him look too good. Then keep him happy until he turns 18 without letting him look too good and then sign him to a five year contract. Let him look good and then sell him after one year. I think that more or less summarizes what we did with Shaw--except his birthday was in the summer which made it easier.
  22. If I read this correctly, he has done nothing but make a non-binding promise to sign a contract next February. Am I missing something? http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/13347198.Slattery_signs_first_Saints_pro_deal/
  23. Thank you. I assume the reduction in tickets sold to away fans is on a game by game basis. If so, how are security concerns dealt with? (I mean the need for segregated seating.) If not, is it fair that a club that buys lots of away tickets has their availability reduced because, for example, Sunderland fans don't want to come here?
  24. Thank you. I just learned something. I didn't even realize that community gardens were a thing and, by googling I discovered that we have several right near where I live. http://centralcoastgrown.org/site/docs/ccancommunityfoodresourceguideoct11-1.pdf I do not suppose anyone can answer my original question now?
