Terrorist Attacks - WARNING: CONTAINS DISTRESSING IMAGES
sadoldgit replied to sadoldgit's topic in The Lounge
Trying to be too subtle perhaps? -
I might agree with you if the word "should" meant anything. You can say that we "should" have gone up both times as champions but we didn't. There are no guarantees in football. Chelsea "should" be finishing in the top 4 this season with all of their resources but we skirting the relegation zone for a while. Given last season you could say that Tottenham "should" be above Leicester this season. You can say we underperformed, but nothing is nailed on in any given season when it kicks off.

Would that be the first statue or the second? But yes, things were pretty awful but who knows where we would be if that hadn't happened? We nearly got bought by the consortium that bought Coventry and I remember many on the forum bigging them up. Lord knows we dodged a bullet there. As grim as it was, would anyone have missed the amazing journey we have been on since?

It was a typo van H. No big deal. -
He was okay. Plenty more up for that accolade. Some old folk might remember Alan McLoughlin, our first million pound player. Total pants for us.

You know what, you have a serious problem, if you arent getting help then I advise that you do. I really cant be bothered to have anything more to do with you. -
Lawrie Mac will always be a hero in my eyes as he managed us in what many of us old uns would say was a golden era for the club. Sadly it all went badly wrong for a while and Lawrie perhaps didn't cover himself in glory either during those days. Still without that ego I doubt if we would have achieved what we did in those days, including the amazing feat of signing the European Footballer of the Year! A true legend for the club, but not without his flaws!

What is your point? Are you saying that there is a difference depending on race or religion when it comes to sexual assault? -
Cloughs drinking did ruin him but drinking was widespread in football, especially amongst the players. When he was signed by us he was seen as a really good appointment. You ignored to mention that he also got Ipswich into Europe. Anyway, we all have different views and I think you will find that there are some Saints fans who didn't have a problem with Burley although I accept that there are plenty who do. I shouldn't have said win ratio, I should have said points average per game, in which he came higher that Lawrie Mac and Hoddle.

When you keep on as if they are the only ones committing these crimes as if is solely down to their religion. I am not angry or upset, I just feel that people like you make things worse for ordinary law abiding people. -
They played a warm up gig at Plymouth just before they played the Isle of Wight festival in 1970 but that was where they became noticed. They were labelled a "supergroup" as they had all been in relatively successful bands before (The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster respectively) but that made them a target for many of the rock press who had a down on them from the start. Bombastic and pretentious were words often thrown at them but their amazing musicianship could not be denied and there first 5 albums were groundbreaking and sold in shedloads. After Brain Salad Surgery they lost their way and the pressure put on them to provide radio friendly short track took its toll on their material, but from 1970 to around 1975 they were massive. The press made a big thing of Punk killing them off but that wasn't the case as shown by bands like Pink Floyd and Genesis continuing to sell out massive shows and shift tons of albums in the late seventies onwards. In fact John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) became buddies when they both moved to Santa Monica and he said he never had a problem with ELP, that was all down to the press. The music from the 60s is often referred to as a golden era, but the 70s also provided some amazing stuff, especially from bands who started out in the 60s.

You seem to have this view that because you don't mention a race or nationality that somehow your views are less abhorrent. -

What an earth is that all about??? -
We actually started to win a lot of away matches under Burley, something we had struggled with previously (including putting 6 past a decent Wolves side at their place). I love the comments about how we should have been successful because of the money we spent. As Manchester City have demonstrated, the millions and millions they have spent have not bought them the required glory they seek in Europe and Leicester have shown what can be achieved with the right chemistry and with spending a fortune. When we appointed Burley he was one of the most sought after young managers in the game. We made the play offs in his only full season with us and were unlucky not to make it but hey, that is football. He had good players sold from underneath him in his second season and it all went downhill from there, including his career it would seem. Not our best manager by a long way but also there were a lot worse. As I kept saying at the time, when he was with us he had the best win ratio of any manager since the war for us so not that shabby. Cleary there are many fans who didn't rate him and no doubt I will get a kicking for being supportive, but I enjoyed the football while he was with us more than I had for a while before and that is the main thing for me. I have been a Saints fan since 1966 and if it had just been about winning things I would see the whole period as a waste of time. As for his being an alcoholic, who knows? A lot of people in football liked a drink back in the day, including the great Brian Clough. For me the bile should be kept for the likes of Redknapp and Branfoot, now those two are worthy targets.

Alex Ferguson is doing fine I believe.

So as it said in one of the articles, if a white male rapes he is a rapist, if a Pakistani rapes he is a Pakistani rapist? Did you read both of the articles? Surely a rapist is a rapist, the race or religion doesn't make a difference. -

Yes thanks. I did say I didn't come across any in my trips there but I am not that blinkered that I don't think that they dont exist in the whole of the country. -

And therein lies the problem. It is easy to pluck figures from various places to support an agenda but how accurate are the figures to start with? I was reading about the Swedish rape figures earlier and it seems that they are not allowed to mention someone's race/religion in the charging so I am not sure how they know how to break down the figures. I worked in the CPS up to a couple of years ago and spent some time with the Rape & Serious Sexual Offences Unit. Not once was it mentioned that there was a bigger problem with a certainly ethnicity group or religious group. You always knew if there was because the computer system would be changed for monitoring purposes. -
God forbid that Boro get promotion and Gaston continues in his current vein of form!!! Cue major meltdown!!
