Adam is under contract so if we dont want to sell he is staying put. If he has a good WC his value can only go up so we are in the driving seat.
-
Every player has his price. I would like to see the board say if anyone wants him we are looking for £30m as we dont wont to sell and dont have to sell. Hopefully that will keep the vultures away but if it doesnt, we have a more than decent price for him. If they buckle just because liverpool are playing hardball that would be disgraceful and we would lose all credibility. Frankly I just wish they would say we are closed until after the WC so dont even bother putting in bids for players!

A few weeks ago we were a model club, one of the best run in the Premiership. Everyone was being praised for playing their part. Now we are lead to believe that many of the staff are inept and we are in mealtdown. How then, did we manage to get to 8th in one of the toughest competitions in football and were the envy of many other clubs? Or did I dream that?

Different circumstances entirely. Pochettino was only here for a short time and it in the early stages of his career in management. Ricky has helped us climb through the divsions and is at the end of his career.

Still cant get my head around this apart from the fact that it seems that Cortese was apparenntly in the process of selling him to West Ham before he left. Pleased for Ricky but really hoped he would end his career with us. A true legend and it will be very hard to replace him. I was looking forward to watching the World Cup with three Saints in the England set up - it looks less and less likely now. I was prepared to give Freddy Krueger the benefit of the doubt after his press release but if players are sold before the new manager comes in where does that leave his credibility? Gutted.

LOL. This just has to be a wind up!

It is widely reported that MP was offered a new contract and in some papers they talked about his terms and money being made available for new players. I wouldnt say that was not doing anything. He had a year of his contract to run so they didnt HAVE to offer him anything, but they did, apparently offer him a new contract. If he chose not to accept it that is a completely different matter I would say.
-
If he had so much passion for the club why did he leave? By all accounts the new offer was a good one.

CORTESE - a personal and factual view of why Ms Liebherr was right.
sadoldgit replied to Fitzhugh Fella's topic in The Saints
If Cortese was such a genius why didnt he tie Pochettino down to a longer contract? He no doubt still would have walked but we might have got more than a measly £2m out of it. -
After last season it would have been good to see if we could push on but this isnt the 70s and it is all about "projects" and Champions League football sadly. It is a job. Cortese jumped ship and the manager looks like he is doing likewise. I am more worried about our better players going but if that is limited to Shaw and Lallana and the new manager can bring in decent replacements there is no reason why we cant have a decent season next season too. Pochettino was good but is stll unproven at a higher level and his transfer activity wasn't brilliant. He will need to develop other ways of playing than just a high pressing game at Spurs and it will not be easy for him there. Onwards and upwards - keep the faith!

Time has moved on Alps, and so must we! -

I doubt very much that Marcus would have thrown millions into the team and we were always told that we would have to live within our means. I am sure KL will carry on in the same manner as her father. Prudent investment. Where is started to go wrong was when Cortese sanctioned silly money for Osvaldo and Ramirez. -
No thanks.

He let Oxlade-Chamberlain go and apparently was in the process of selling one of our best players (Ricky Lambert) to West Ham just before he left. -

So he wouldnt have let any players go...but he would after 2 seasons? Isnt that letting players go? -
You are right and I have to offer up my apologies. I would have put my mortgage on SCW being here when we went down but clearly that wasn’t the case. I do strongly recall that Redknapp would not let him near the 1st team though and was clearly put out by his arrival, despite the statements to the media otherwise. Nowadays it is a given that a lot of sport is in the head but back then it seemed like witchcraft to many in football. To say that you can’t coach penalty taking is a nonsense. Ashley Cole is a prime example. At the top of his trade for many years - rubbish penalty taker. When asked about taking a pen for England he actually said he would probably miss. That tells you all you need to know. Do you think Ricky Lambert or MLT had any such doubts? They don’t need coaching but many players do. David Beckham, like Johnny Wilkinson used to spend hour after hour perfecting their technique and applying "muscle memory." I am sure Woodward would not claim to have invented this approach - what he was was one of the first people to say it out loud in relation to football and he has a lot more in his locker than just identifying the need to deal with penalties differently.
-
Lowe was given a right kicking over Woodward's appointment but getting someone at the top of their game in that area was a materstroke at the time. Redkanpp wouldn't have it though. As he managed to finish bottom a few conversations with SCW surely couldn't have hurt. And to think, HR nearly became England manager!!! Jeez.

Can we put to bed the nonsense that we were doomed when NC left.....
sadoldgit replied to washsaint's topic in The Saints
Big fishes eat little fishes. Always have, always will. NC or no NC the bigger clubs were always going to be after our stars. Thats the way they stay bigger clubs. If not ours, someone elses. It is the price of success for clubs like us. We will always be preyed upon. Liverpool did a great job in keeping their star player last year. We can only hope that the club has the resolve and the players want to stay. There are always other CEOs, managers and players though. We just have to hope that we replace with as good as if not better. -
Disappointed we didnt bring another classy centre back in.
-
No one is bigger than the club. Least of al people with over inflated egos. He treated people badly, had no respect for our tradition. It was all about him as this has proved. Perhaps he would like to take Osvaldo and Ramirez with him. What a waste of money.

Cortese has left Southampton Football Club - Officially Confirmed
sadoldgit replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
He was Lowe with money and a lesser grasp of the club's history and tradition. Thanks for getting us back to the Premiership and goodbye. -
Perhaps now we can have our stripes back?

We are turning into a souless brand - that is what is happening.
