  1. Actually it was said by a Burke.
  2. Unfair and unneccessary. Come on NC. Time to move on.
  3. Yep 69/70 season as well. I remember the season before. Skipped college to travel up mid week in January to WHL. Started snowing when we arrived and they called off the game about 10 minutes before it was due to start. Travelled up again for the rearranged game at the end of the season. We lost 2-1 Davies scoring again. Bobby Stokes and Micky Judd were small forwards and just bounced off their big defenders. They pinched 6 place from us and we ended 7th. We qualified for Europe for the first time because you could could not field more than one team per city. Everton 3rd, Chelsea 5th and Tottenham 6th could not qualify because Liverpool and Arsenal finished 2nd and 4th respectively. Happy memories.
  4. I said we could compete with anyone. We beat Man Utd 4-1 away (the famous Ron Davies 4 goals) M.U. finished 8th We beat Champions Everton 2-1 at home. We beat runners up Leeds 3-1 away.
  5. Best years for me were 1967 - 1970. We could compete with anyone then.
  6. The golden age was also a time when we could compete in the transfer market. We had little money, no investors yet we were able to sign the best. We also managed runner up to Liverpool. Now without sugar daddies that is almost impossible now. In 83/84 when we did that other teams in the division included: Notts Forest now Championship QPR now Championship Watford now Championship Ipswich Town now Championship Norwich City now Div 1 Leicester City now Championship Luton Town now Conference WBA now Championship Coventry City now Championship Notts County now Div 2 So including us that is half of the teams that played in the division that season! Stats with thanks to "In That Number"
  7. In the year 1982 spanning seasons 1981/82 & 1982/83 we had 5 England Captains (one of them a future captain) involved with the first team games. Mick Mills made his debut on 13th November 1982, Alan Ball had already played his last game for Saints on 30th October 1982. Mick Channon's last game for Saints was 15th May 1982, the same for Kevin Keegan. Peter Shilton's debut for Saints was 28th August 1982. Mark Wright's was 17th April 1982. The season we ended runner up in the old First Division 1983/84 Ball, Channon and Keegan had already left.
  8. The Manager and the Players will see this as 2 points dropped against an average Div 1 side but, of course, it could have been worse. We are going to get the odd result like this but we canot afford too many slip ups if we are going to challenge the top 6. Good comeback from a fighting Saints side though and not for the first time this season. I am quietly confident we will gradually rise up the table. Playoffs may be a step too far but still possible.
  9. Hello, do you know something? Rhetorical by the way.
  10. I know, that is how I knew who he was
  11. Why not write a polite letter to the club with your views. You are a known figure and have links to the ex players.
  12. Think it best we do not try to "out" any posters. I know who Danny is. Let us leave it at that and not speculate
  13. Lowe's arrogance would make it a waste of time. Lowe's communication skills leave a lot to be desired. Lowe's incapability of seeing he is in anyway to blame for any of this would likewise make it a waste of time. His hands were financially tied but as Wes says, he never explored any alternative. It might have made no difference. It might have hastened Administration and left us with the points deduction last season instead of this but it might just have worked. It was not put to the test and no one can really know the outcome.
  14. To your first paragraph Wes, I honestly do not know. The free transfer and loans would come at a price. I said that. It was a price Saints could not afford whilst senior players were still drawing wages. One thing I was told recently by someone very close to Lowe at the time was that his mistake was insisting on using all youngsters rather that the expensive players he was trying to offload. There was the cost of appearance fees and bonuses though. It was all about saving anything they could. There was even a school of thought that Drew Surman had the penalty taking role withdrawn because McGoldric was on cheaper bonus. Still, all water under the bridge now. The future looks rosey. Long may it continue
  15. Not going but looking forward to following it. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going and get another win. 2-1 to Saints is my feeling. Orient brings back great memories of the past Saints success.
  16. I do know that money was so tight we were in danger of going under from day 1. It cost nothing to release Pearson but would have cost a lot more to employ him rather than the Dutch failures. In my opinion, at the time the decision was made, Pearson had proved nothing. He nearly got us relegated. I liked him and think he could have achieved something the dutch could not. He proved that with Leicester. Definately a mistake by Lowe, with hindsight. Could we have bought in players rather than play the youngsters? They were on low wages and the high earners we could not afford were still burning a big hole in the finances. Free transfers and loans is one thing. Paying signing on fees and salaries of experienced journeyman was just beyond the finances. The damage was done when we were first relegated and failed to get back up. That damage was hightened during the Hone era. Crouch was left with nothing although he did try. My comment to Daren was that they did try to get in investment. They were frustrated at every corner. They did not just sit there and let the club die.
  17. Mine is home made. Pancake made it for me in another life
  18. Pretty much agree with your views on McMenemy, Crouch and Le Tissier. As for Lowe and Cowan (I know you did not mention him) whatever you might think about the releasing of Pearson, the employment of the Dutch, the use of inexperienced kids in the first team you are wrong to say they ran and hid and did nothing to help the club when it was in danger of going out of business. They busted a gut to try to save the club from Administration. There is a lot I know from the inside at that time and the frustration they found at every investment corner but I am not able to repeat it on here. You will have to take my word for it. Am I glad Lowe has gone? Most certainly, for all the reasons I have given in the past on other threads. Was he the sole reason for us finding ourselves in Administration? Certainly not, in my opinion. As for posters winding others up, why not ignore them? You and Wes Tender (and a few others) are getting as obsessed with Nineteen Canteen as he is with the failings of McMenemy, Crouch and Le Tissier. Just my opinion you understand!
  19. I can agree with all of what you say in this post.
  20. Exactly. They are human and made mistakes. They are no different to anyone else and as such are open to criticism the same as anyone else on this message board. They provided a bit of entertainment. They are not Gods. They did not save lives or change the world. For me McMenemy was the best manager Saints have had to date. Le Tissier was possibily (there are others in contention) the best player Saints have had. If some want to praise them, fine. If some want to criticise them fine. It is all about debate and perspective. Surely that is what this message board is about. This is not aimed at you alone Daren. It is aimed at anyone who find difficulty with alternative opinion and cannot debate without geting personal.
  21. Perhaps legend is the wrong word. Main Entry: leg·end Pronunciation: \ˈle-jənd\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English legende, from Anglo-French & Medieval Latin; Anglo-French legende, from Medieval Latin legenda, from Latin, feminine of legendus, gerundive of legere to gather, select, read; akin to Greek legein to gather, say, logos speech, word, reason Date: 14th century 1 a : a story coming down from the past; especially : one popularly regarded as historical although not verifiable b : a body of such stories c : a popular myth of recent origin d : a person or thing that inspires legends e : the subject of a legend 2 a : an inscription or title on an object (as a coin) b : caption c : an explanatory list of the symbols on a map or chart Perhaps most memorable Saints Manager might be a better qualification
  22. It was your cutting edge verbals as you stamped your authority on this forum that did it.
  23. Help for Heroes (H4H) was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry after a profoundly moving visit to Selly Oak Hospital in the summer of 2007. Bryn and Emma met some extraordinarily brave young people who had been badly wounded and they just wanted to do something to help. The charity was launched in October 2007 Help for Heroes is strictly non-political. They have no affiliation with any political party and do not endorse the use of their name for the promotion of any political viewpoint. The money that they raise at Help for Heroes is used to support wounded Servicemen and women of every colour and creed and they strongly oppose any individual or political party who believes otherwise, and those who seek to use the charity’s name for their own political gain So far the charity has raised over £30m and spent over £23m of that on: Army Recovery Centres 10,000,000 Not Forgotten Association 60,000 Deptherapy 4,400 British Limbless Ex Service Men’s Association (BLESMA) 100,000 Erskine Hospital 750,000 Skill Force 224,300 Troop Aid 50,000 Battle Back 308,000 Combat Stress 3,500,000 Selly Oak Patients Welfare Fund 10,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) 520,000 DMRC Headley Court 8,000,000 Here is a link if you want to know more or support this very worthy cause: http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/

  25. Sad to see no one mention David Webb. Best games for us were in muddy conditions. He just loved the mud
