It seems to me you regularly break them with your replies. For me I am satisfied Pardue does his homework, Alpine. He has two styles available to him. He seems to like to try to contain with a holding midfielder for the first part of the game using Papa to run riot down the right. This system was applied because Pardue was worried that Papa had not learned to track back and help out the defence. We were hit by an early goal but usually our two centre backs have been able to cope with the ball in the air. Against MK Dons it was a free kick very late in the first half. I blame Davis for not sorting out his wall properly. Barnsley scored 2 identical goals last season. Against Southend, again it was a superb free kick that equalised our goal. Can other teams work us out? No more than we can them. The essence is that we have two excellent systems now and can quickly change them If one is not working. I think you have missed the point of this evening. The event was advertised as a charity event costing £40 a ticket. For that you had a meal plus a guest speaker, Matt Le Tissier. McMenemy was not named as an attendee. He was a suprise additional guest. No matter what we may think of McMenemy and his recent Saints involvement or his refusal to pay for a ticket to SMS you cannot fault the time he puts in for Charitable events. I think some of the responses on this thread are over the top and out of order. I hope my explanation helps as I feel from your posts you misunderstood the event.

Yep 69/70 season as well. I remember the season before. Skipped college to travel up mid week in January to WHL. Started snowing when we arrived and they called off the game about 10 minutes before it was due to start. Travelled up again for the rearranged game at the end of the season. We lost 2-1 Davies scoring again. Bobby Stokes and Micky Judd were small forwards and just bounced off their big defenders. They pinched 6 place from us and we ended 7th. We qualified for Europe for the first time because you could could not field more than one team per city. Everton 3rd, Chelsea 5th and Tottenham 6th could not qualify because Liverpool and Arsenal finished 2nd and 4th respectively. Happy memories.

I said we could compete with anyone. We beat Man Utd 4-1 away (the famous Ron Davies 4 goals) M.U. finished 8th We beat Champions Everton 2-1 at home. We beat runners up Leeds 3-1 away.

Best years for me were 1967 - 1970. We could compete with anyone then.

The golden age was also a time when we could compete in the transfer market. We had little money, no investors yet we were able to sign the best. We also managed runner up to Liverpool. Now without sugar daddies that is almost impossible now. In the year 1982 spanning seasons 1981/82 & 1982/83 we had 5 England Captains (one of them a future captain) involved with the first team games. Mick Mills made his debut on 13th November 1982, Alan Ball had already played his last game for Saints on 30th October 1982. Mick Channon's last game for Saints was 15th May 1982, the same for Kevin Keegan. Peter Shilton's debut for Saints was 28th August 1982. Mark Wright's was 17th April 1982. The season we ended runner up in the old First Division 1983/84 Ball, Channon and Keegan had already left.

The Manager and the Players will see this as 2 points dropped against an average Div 1 side but, of course, it could have been worse. We are going to get the odd result like this but we canot afford too many slip ups if we are going to challenge the top 6. Good comeback from a fighting Saints side though and not for the first time this season. I am quietly confident we will gradually rise up the table. Playoffs may be a step too far but still possible.

Lowe's arrogance would make it a waste of time. Lowe's communication skills leave a lot to be desired. Lowe's incapability of seeing he is in anyway to blame for any of this would likewise make it a waste of time. His hands were financially tied but as Wes says, he never explored any alternative. It might have made no difference. It might have hastened Administration and left us with the points deduction last season instead of this but it might just have worked. It was not put to the test and no one can really know the outcome.

To your first paragraph Wes, I honestly do not know. The free transfer and loans would come at a price. I said that. It was a price Saints could not afford whilst senior players were still drawing wages. One thing I was told recently by someone very close to Lowe at the time was that his mistake was insisting on using all youngsters rather that the expensive players he was trying to offload. There was the cost of appearance fees and bonuses though. It was all about saving anything they could. There was even a school of thought that Drew Surman had the penalty taking role withdrawn because McGoldric was on cheaper bonus. Still, all water under the bridge now. The future looks rosey. I do know that money was so tight we were in danger of going under from day 1. It cost nothing to release Pearson but would have cost a lot more to employ him rather than the Dutch failures. In my opinion, at the time the decision was made, Pearson had proved nothing. He nearly got us relegated. I liked him and think he could have achieved something the dutch could not. He proved that with Leicester. Definately a mistake by Lowe, with hindsight. Could we have bought in players rather than play the youngsters? They were on low wages and the high earners we could not afford were still burning a big hole in the finances. Free transfers and loans is one thing. Paying signing on fees and salaries of experienced journeyman was just beyond the finances. The damage was done when we were first relegated and failed to get back up. That damage was hightened during the Hone era. Crouch was left with nothing although he did try. My comment to Daren was that they did try to get in investment. They were frustrated at every corner. They did not just sit there and let the club die.
