Lloyd James - capt

Little gestures like this can work wonders for a player's confidence and I think Lloyd fully deserved the honour after his willingness to play out of position and take the flak last season.

Interesting.

I am beginning to get a feel of a squad being built around Lloyd, Gillett and Davis, last seasons regulars, and reliable.

It will be interesting to see if Henderson can build a team built on players' strengths, and in their best positions - and about time too that this 'revolutionary' idea was tried out.

he wont have time, i would expect the new boss to be here for the ajax game if not soon after

i may get slated for this but over the length of the season LJ + Gillett impressed me by the progress they made, same with Fish to a lesser extent, hopefully these guys + Lallana continue to improve this season because we should really be keeping these crop of players until they are at least 25 and not just get rid and watch them flourish at another club.

I've seen Lloyd James play centre midfield for the academy & he's a quality player

I was worried his development was going to be harmed at right-back, and the fans would start making him a scapegoat, but that didn't appear to be the case

He's never indicated that he wants to play for anyone else, gives 100% every match & we should embrace guys like him - Lloyd James is a major part of Saints future

Lloyd has a good chance of being a good footballer but he has to end his determination of going on the lash.

He needs to be sat down and shown the way forward or he will never make the grade.A shameful waste

a lot of our kids seem to have this trait in them now, one of the pitfalls to coming through the academy as a tightknit group i suppose, mind you, I wouldnt expect them to do this with a Nigel Pearson or a Strachan as the manager where attitude would be paramount to selection, kids and young adults alike need a bit of discapline.

Like at the totton game, when after being subbed he went straight to the bar!! Dunno what he ordered though. He is a good lad though. Was gutted when me and a mate spoke to h after the burnley game last season.

Alot of kids have this trait generally.

Alot of footballers have this trait.

Kids get smashed. Footballers get smashed. Lloyd James, Lallana, Gillet, Lancashire etc are all young footballers, they are going to go out on the last just as much as anyone.

As long as they are fit and ready to play on a Saturday who gives an arse? Every football club has players who go get steaming.

Whether it was under Pearson or Strachan it would still be the same.

Well it's time for that culture to be erased from young professional footballers. Yes it is a sacrifice but they are paid well to make those. If they go out they do not need to end up rata###d. They need to be educated into having a good time without getting drunk.

I think there are several reason for this, obviously no Davis so someone needed to step in, Murty isn't our player and although Thomas has been a captain before, I think Lloyd got the nod as he has played with most of the players last season, whereas Thomas was injured.

Also, if my memory serves me correctly, he is/was captain of the Welsh under 19's and 21's so has had experience there

The point being that if they go out on the lash, they are not fit and ready to play on a Saturday or any other day! Suggest you look at some sports science studies on the affects of alcohol on athletes in general.

I study sport science so I'm not going to deny the affects of alcohol on athletes. But drinking is a culture in England. Whether its athletes or not it is going to happen. It does happen and it will continue to happen.

It doesn't stop them playing on a Saturday because they don't do it the night before. They do it just as much as any other players at any other football. Apart from Arsenal.

It would take a massive overhaul in culture of football to stamp it out as someone suggested above. Even Strachan/Pearson couldn't do it. Wenger did it by an overhaul of the whole club, including bringing in the youngsters from all over the world whose culture doesnt involve getting smashed all week.

Nobody would be able to stamp it out of our kids right now. It's something we have to accept like every other club and just deal with it.

I read an article by James Milner( 23 years old ) saying that he did'nt touch alcohol because "there would be plenty of time to drink when I retire from the game".This guy plays for a top 6 Premiership team, and is on the fringe of the full national team, after excelling at U-21 level.

Coincidence - I dont think so.

That is such a sad indictment of our society or malaise by the powers that be. WGS tried and I agree it is nye impossible to eradicate but surely it is in all parties interest to try and educate these people.

What a fantastic point. Contrast this to Micah Richards, who on his diagnosis of Swine Flu responded that at first he thought he had alcohol poisioning!!!

You are right, its not a coincedence. I would say however Milner is a class act compared to some of our younger players and that is the main reason why he is in a top 6 club.

But he is one player. There are probably others in football. Just as there is 23yr olds not in football that don't drink. However there are footballers who drink just as there is non footballers that drink.

Its life. It's what human beings do. Its the british culture and it is something that bar the odd player like Milner that will not change.

It sucks but you have to remember these boys are humans aswell. Not just these footballers that we think should be training hard all week and playing well on a Saturday. They are not robots that we should try and control as fans. They are human beings. Young adults who can make there own decisions and have there own personal lifes outside of football.

The only thing that makes them different to us is they are much better at football than we are and lucky sods to be able to be paid to do something we'd all love to do.

That shouldn't change your chance to go out and have a drink. However many you want. Just as we have the right to drink as much as we want and when we want. So do they.

I think you are missing the point. It's okay to have some drinks but not okay to get pished up - both as a professional footballer and representative of the club.

I have no problem with players socialising/clubbing, but I do have a problem if they are completely trashed. You make a choice: be another kid on the pish, or make the grade as a professional.

Another point being that if I show up to work regularly the worse for wear after drinking - not drunk, but less able to perform well than if I hadn't got hammered - then my employer would probably be within its rights to ask me to cooperate with an Employee Assistance programme, and/or to put me on some sort of performance management. If your job depends on you being physically fit and mentally alert, then you have a responsibility to maintain an appropriate lifestyle.
